Chart calculated with Maia Mechanics, from an AA-rated birth record
Quick look: Martha Stewart is a Manifestor, and a Manifestor’s strategy is not a way of deciding. It is a way of telling people. She spent fifty years starting things nobody asked her to start, and the initiating was never the problem. The single documented catastrophe of her career turned on the part that comes after the act, when a fast unilateral move went out into the world without an account that held up.
If you are the person in your business who moves first and explains later, this one repays a close read. The mechanic that made her career is the same mechanic that cost her five months, and the difference between the two is one step.

Where this chart comes from
Most public-figure charts are built on a guess. Where no birth time is on record, a noon default gets substituted, and every layer that depends on the minute is then presented as settled fact.
Stewart’s is not a guess. Astro-Databank records her birth as August 3, 1941 at 1:33 pm in Jersey City, New Jersey, sourced from the birth certificate and rated AA, its highest tier of confidence, contributed by Lois Rodden herself. Because the time is on record, nothing in this article needs hedging: Profile, Authority and Definition can all be stated directly.
The bodygraph here was calculated from those details using the Swiss Ephemeris rather than copied off a chart website, so a reviewer can reproduce it. The positions match the independently published ones exactly, with the Sun at 10°58’ Leo. The chart shown above was then rendered with Maia Mechanics, and every activation in it agrees with the independent calculation, planet for planet.
What that produces: a Manifestor with a 4/6 Profile, Emotional Authority and a Split Definition. Five of the nine centers are defined, through three channels: 35-36 Transitoriness, joining the Throat to the Solar Plexus; 25-51 Initiation, joining the G Center to the Heart; and 49-19 Synthesis, joining the Solar Plexus to the Root. Her Personality Sun sits in gate 33 and her Design Sun in gate 24, which puts her on the Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways 2 (33/19 | 24/44).
Four centers carry no definition at all: Head, Ajna, Spleen and Sacral. Hold onto that list, because the last section of this piece is about what she built out of it. If you want to run your own chart against what follows, myBodyGraph.com will calculate one.
A Manifestor in a field of Generators
Every other figure covered in this series so far is a Generator. Stewart is the first Manifestor, and the difference is not cosmetic.
A Generator’s design answers something. A Manifestor’s does not wait to be asked. The Manifestor has a motor running to the Throat with no Sacral in the circuit, which mechanically means the capacity to start is available without anything external triggering it. In business that shows up as a person who brings things into existence that were not requested, could not have been requested, and had no category to be requested from.
Her record is close to a controlled experiment in this. In 1976 she started catering out of her own basement in Westport, Connecticut. Within about a decade that basement operation was a million-dollar business. Nobody commissioned it.
The book is sharper still. Entertaining was published in December 1982, co-written with Elizabeth Hawes, and it became the bestselling cookbook since Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking twenty years earlier. What matters mechanically is the argument that preceded it. When the publisher costed out the lavish, full-color, heavily photographed volume she was proposing, they balked at the expense. She did not scale the proposal down to what they were comfortable funding. They funded what she proposed, and the first printing sold out almost immediately.
Then the piece most founders never manage. In February 1997 she bought her way out of her own contract with Time Inc., acquiring the Martha Stewart magazine and television assets outright, and in September 1997 formed Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia around them. On October 19, 1999 that company went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker MSO: 8.28 million shares priced at $18, opening at $18 and running to $38 the same day, valuing the business at about $1.73 billion and her own stake at roughly $1.2 billion.
A Generator would have needed the world to offer each of those steps first. Stewart initiated all of them. The brand outlasted the company that carried it: Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia was sold to Sequential Brands in 2015 and on to Marquee Brands in June 2019 for $175 million, with Stewart staying on to keep guiding it, and her own site still runs as the hub the whole thing points at.
Her Sun sits in the gate called Privacy
Her Personality Sun is in gate 33, in the Throat. In the reference material this site works from, gate 33 is named Privacy.
The woman who turned her own house into a brand, who let cameras into her kitchen, who published her gardens and her linen closet and her Thanksgiving table, carries her Sun in the gate of what is withheld.
There is no contradiction in it once you read the mechanic properly. Gate 33 is about retreat and the selection of what gets told, which is a very different thing from having nothing to tell. The output of a design like this is a curated account. What reached the public was never Martha Stewart’s private life. It was a produced version of a private life, edited by the person living it. Gate 33 runs through her Throat at industrial scale, and that is the shape it takes.
The 4/6 Profile explains how the opportunities found her. The fourth line runs on network: on the specific people who already know you rather than on cold approach. The origin of the book deal is the cleanest illustration in her record. She was catering parties for publishers in New York, and the contract came out of that room, from someone who had eaten her food and wanted a book from the person who made it. She did not query publishers. She fed them.
The same four gates as another founder on this site, dealt out backwards
Jessica Alba, covered here earlier this month, is on the Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways (24/44 | 19/33). Stewart is on the Four Ways 2 (33/19 | 24/44). Identical gates, all four of them, arranged the other way round.
What separates them is which pair is conscious. The Personality side of a chart is the part the system treats as available to the person; the Design side runs underneath it, as body rather than commentary. Alba’s Sun and Earth sit in 24 and 44 on the Personality side, with 19 and 33 below. Stewart runs the arrangement the other way: 33 and 19 conscious, 24 and 44 underneath.
That inversion has teeth, because of where those gates land in each chart. Alba’s gate 24 is structural. It pairs with 61 to form her 61-24 channel and it is part of what defines her Ajna. In Stewart’s chart the same 24, plus the 44 beside it, fall in her Ajna and her Spleen, and both of those centers are open. Her entire unconscious Sun and Earth axis sits in territory that has no fixed definition at all.
The two records diverge along the same line. Alba could describe her own process accurately and staffed around it, declining the chief executive’s chair on purpose. Stewart’s conscious axis is the gate of Privacy running through a Throat, and she built a business out of publishing a curated version of her own life while the mechanics she could not see ran through her two open centers. Same four gates. Two entirely different companies.
The split, and the partner who bridged it
Her Definition is Split, and the shape of the split is specific. One group holds the G Center and the Heart. The other holds the Root, the Solar Plexus and the Throat. Nothing connects them.
Definition describes how much of your own process completes without another person present. A split means the bridging comes from outside. In her case the G Center, which carries identity and direction, sits joined to the Heart, which carries willpower and the appetite for a deal, through the 25-51 channel that the reference material calls Initiation. Gate 51 is named Shock. That pairing, running on its own island, is a self-contained engine for being first at something and for backing that instinct with her own money and name.
What it does not reach is the Throat. Her voice, her emotional processing and her root pressure are on the other side of the gap, in the group carrying 35-36 Transitoriness and 49-19 Synthesis. Gate 35 is Change and gate 36 is Crisis. A Throat wired directly into the emotional center through those two is a design that converts feeling into public expression and hungers for the next experience, which is a fair description of a career that ran caterer to author to magazine founder to television host to public-company chief executive.
The public record shows the bridge being staffed. Sharon Patrick consulted for the business from 1993, structured the roughly $75 million purchase of the Time Inc. assets, and served as president and chief operating officer of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and a director from 1997. The founder initiated. The partner connected the initiating to the operating. For a Split Definition, that arrangement completes a process the founder cannot close alone.
December 27, 2001
A Manifestor’s strategy is to inform. Alone among the strategies, it governs less how you decide than what you owe the people your decision lands on, delivered before it lands. The mechanical reason is that a Manifestor acts without needing anyone’s agreement, so the people affected find out by being hit. Informing is what converts that impact into something the people around you can absorb.
Stewart also has Emotional Authority. Both channels running into her Solar Plexus come up from the Root, a pressure center. That is a system built to feel things under pressure and to need time before the read settles. There is no reliable clarity available to a design like this in the moment.
On December 27, 2001 she sold all 3,928 of her ImClone Systems shares. The next day the Food and Drug Administration’s refusal to approve the company’s cancer drug Erbitux became public and the stock collapsed. The sale spared her a loss of about $45,673.
Note what she was and was not charged with. Prosecutors did not charge her with insider trading. In June 2003 she was indicted, and in March 2004 she was convicted of conspiracy, obstruction of an agency proceeding, and making false statements to federal investigators. She was sentenced in July 2004 to five months in prison and two years of supervised release, reported to the federal prison camp at Alderson, West Virginia on October 8, 2004, and was released on March 4, 2005.
The trade itself was never the crime. What she was convicted of was the account she gave of it afterward, which the jury did not accept.
Read mechanically, that is a Manifestor problem in its purest form. A fast unilateral move made under pressure, on a day, without the wave completing. Then the step that a Manifestor’s whole strategy exists to enforce, not taken cleanly. Informing is load-bearing for this design rather than a courtesy, and the record shows what the structure does when that beam is missing.
None of this excuses or explains away the conviction, and none of it claims anything about what she knew or intended, which a chart cannot tell you. The claim is narrower: the shape of the failure matches the shape of the design.
Four cycles, all of them lived
Transiting planets return to the exact degrees of a person’s own chart on a calculable schedule. Stewart, born in 1941, has lived through all of the major ones. The dates below were calculated against her own natal positions using the Swiss Ephemeris, and the gate each transiting planet occupied was derived from the same reference wheel used for the chart itself.
Saturn Return (30’s): May 28, 1971, in gate 8
Her Saturn returned to 27°17’ Taurus on May 28, 1971, landing in gate 8, which the reference material names Contribution, in the Throat.
That year Stewart and her husband bought an 1805 farmhouse on Turkey Hill Road in Westport for $46,750. It was a wreck, and they spent decades restoring it. She lived there from 1971 until 2007.
A Saturn Return is a structural accounting. What she acquired at hers was a building, not a job or a company; she was still a stockbroker at the time and would not start catering for another five years. That building became the set: its kitchen appears in Entertaining, and the property is the physical ground the entire brand was later photographed on. A Saturn Return in the gate of Contribution, spent buying the thing she would spend the rest of her working life contributing from, is about as literal as these get.
Uranus Opposition (40’s): 1981, in gate 14
Transiting Uranus reached the point opposite her natal Uranus three times, on February 11, March 27 and November 14, 1981, sitting in gate 14, named Power Skills, in the Sacral. Gate 14 is the resource gate.
Entertaining was published in December 1982, about thirteen months after the final pass. That is outside the tight window rather than inside it, and it is worth saying so plainly instead of stretching the date. What sits inside 1981 is the production of the book and the fight over its format: the year the catering business stopped being a catering business and became the source material for a publishing property. A Uranus Opposition breaks an established pattern, and the pattern that broke here was that she was a caterer.
Chiron Return (50’s): September 9, 1991, in gate 31
Chiron returned to her natal 5°32’ Leo three times, on September 9, 1991, February 9, 1992 and May 26, 1992, in gate 31, named Influence, in the Throat.
Time Inc. had approved two test issues of Martha Stewart Living, the first in November 1990 and the second in March 1991. The response to those tests was strong enough that Time committed to six issues a year. The first Chiron pass lands about six months after the second test issue, in the window where the magazine stopped being an experiment and became a periodical with her name on the cover. Gate 31 is the gate of leading by being the one people follow, and 1991 is the year the following became a subscription.
Second Saturn Return (60’s): July 2000 to March 2001, in gate 8 again
Saturn came back to the same degree three times, on July 7 and November 21, 2000 and March 27, 2001, in gate 8 once more.
This window is quieter than the others in terms of headline events, and it is more honest to describe what it contains than to reach for a dramatic anchor. What it contains is the first sustained test of the public company. Shares that had touched $38 on the first day in 1999 and traded just under $40 early in 2000 spent the following period sliding, and the founder-dependency that had made the IPO work was becoming the thing analysts asked about. The ImClone sale falls nine months after the last pass rather than inside the window, so I will not claim it as the event. The window is the pressure that preceded it.
Where the actual profit was: her open centers
Four of Stewart’s nine centers carry no definition: Head, Ajna, Spleen and Sacral. My own model of profit potential holds that the commercial edge tends to sit in the open centers rather than the defined ones. A defined center answers the same way every time. An open center takes in whatever the moment brings, cycles through every version of that pressure over years, and eventually develops a read on the terrain that a fixed center in the same position never acquires.
Head and Ajna. Both open, which means no fixed source of inspiration and no fixed way of conceptualizing. A design like this takes in other people’s questions and amplifies them rather than generating its own from a settled position. Look at what she monetized. The reader-question format began in the Entertaining newsletter she started in spring 1988, became the askMartha column, and by early 1998 was syndicated in 212 newspapers alongside a daily 90-second radio feature carried on 135 stations. An entire distribution business built on answering questions that arrived from outside. That is an open Head and Ajna turned into a product line.
Spleen. Open, which means no fixed instinct, only a live and highly sensitive read on what is safe that has to be checked rather than trusted on reflex. This is the center the December 2001 decision ran through, and the public record is the record of what happens when a read that sharp gets acted on at speed without verification. An open Spleen guarantees nothing about being right. It is an instrument, and it has to be calibrated against the world.
Sacral. Open, which for a Manifestor means there is no fixed, self-renewing work engine in the design at all. Stewart has said publicly for years that she sleeps three to four hours a night, and that sleep is not, for her, the most important thing. Mechanically, an open Sacral does not run on a consistent internal supply. It takes in and amplifies whatever energy is available around it, which can carry a person a very long way past what a fixed Sacral would sustain, and gives no built-in signal for when to stop. Whatever you make of the sleep, the business she built out of it was not built on endurance in the Generator sense. It was built on repeated initiation.
Four open centers, four different pressures, and between them they account for the product, the crisis and the working method. The defined half of her chart explains what she started. The open half explains what she sold.
What to do on Monday
- If you initiate without being asked, treat informing as part of the act rather than as follow-up. Name who your next decision lands on, and tell them before it lands, not after they notice.
- If your Authority is emotional, put a fixed delay on anything involving money moving. Nothing that arrives inside a single phone call is clarity.
- Look at where your Definition splits, and hire into the gap rather than trying to discipline your way across it.
- Audit which of your open centers your revenue comes from. It is usually not the part of you that feels most reliable.
- Separate the thing you initiate from the account you give of it. Businesses rarely fail on the first. They fail on the second.
