Tyra Banks, Human Design, and the Franchise She Made Sure She Owned

Tyra Banks has an undefined Throat and a split definition that closes only by routing through it. The most recognizable presenter in American reality television built her commercial position on owning a format rather than on owning a voice, and the dates line up almost exactly with her own transit schedule.

Chart calculated with Maia Mechanics, from an AA-rated birth record

Quick look: Tyra Banks has an undefined Throat, and a split definition that closes only by routing through it. The commercial consequence is unusually legible. The most recognizable presenter in American reality television did not build her position on owning a voice. She built it on owning a format: creating America’s Next Top Model, taking the executive producer credit, and running it through a production company she controlled.

If you keep being told that your business should be built on your personal brand, her record is worth reading closely. The open Throat is the last place a design like hers should be asked to carry a business, and what she actually owned was the structure built around it.

Where this chart comes from

Most public-figure charts are built on a guess. Where no birth time is on record a noon default gets substituted, and everything that depends on the minute is then presented as fact.

Banks’s is a genuine exception. Astro-Databank records her birth as 4 December 1973 at 7:13pm in Inglewood, California, taken from the birth record and rated AA, its highest category of confidence. The date and place are independently confirmed by the standard biographical record, including Britannica.

The bodygraph here was calculated from those details using the Swiss Ephemeris rather than copied from a chart website, then checked activation by activation against a Maia Mechanics render. All twenty-six positions match, on both the Design and Personality sides.

The recorded minute earns its keep in a specific place. Running the same calculation against a noon default returns the same Type, Profile and Authority, which is unusual, but it loses the channel 32-54 entirely, because the Design Moon moves out of gate 54. A noon-default chart of Banks has no ambition circuitry in it at all. That channel turns out to be central to her record, and it exists only because the real time is on file.

What the real data produces: a Generator with a 2/4 profile, Sacral Authority, a Split definition, and the Right Angle Cross of Consciousness (4) (5/35 | 64/63). Six of the nine centers are defined — Head, Ajna, G, Sacral, Spleen and Root — through six channels: 64-47 Abstraction, 15-5 Rhythm, 10-34 Exploration, 9-52 Concentration, 32-54 Transformation and 18-58 Judgment. The Throat, the Heart and the Solar Plexus carry no definition at all.

The presenter with no defined Throat

The Throat is where a design becomes speech and action. Banks has exactly one Throat gate active in her chart, gate 35, Change, sitting as her Personality Earth, and nothing completes it: its partner gate, 36, sits in a Solar Plexus she has no definition in either. Her Throat is open.

An open Throat is not muteness, and it is not shyness. It is the absence of a fixed way of speaking. The register gets taken from whatever setting the person is actually in, rather than running on a current of its own. Read as a business specification rather than as a personality trait, it says something precise: this is not a design built to be the reliable source of the message on demand. It is a design built to speak inside a structure that somebody supplies.

Her definition says the same thing from a second direction. Banks has a Split: her defined centers fall into two groups — Head with Ajna, and G with Sacral, Spleen and Root — and nothing in her own chart joins them. The only route between the two runs through the Throat, by way of gates 20 and 62. Both are Throat gates. She carries neither.

So the design completes itself when something outside it supplies a Throat. A weekly television format supplies exactly that, and supplies it on a schedule: a set of chairs, a running order, a reason to speak, and somebody else’s question to answer.

Most founder advice would read an open Throat as a problem to fix — get media training, find your voice, become the brand. The record suggests she did something considerably smarter than that.

Saturn Return (30’s), 25 June 2003: she created the format instead of taking the job

Tyra Banks's Saturn Return chart Tyra Banks’s Saturn Return transit chart, age 29, calculated for 25 June 2003, 02:34 UTC.

A Saturn Return is a structural accounting: the point where whatever has been building gets tested against reality, and what is not load-bearing comes down. Hers fell exactly on 25 June 2003 at 02:34 UTC, with transiting Saturn at gate 15, line 5 — a return to her own natal Saturn in the same gate and the same line, on a moment that itself carries the Left Angle Cross of Prevention (15/10 | 17/18).

That gate matters more than usual here. Gate 15, Extremes, sits in the G Center and forms one half of the channel 15-5 Rhythm. The other half, gate 5, Fixed Rhythms, in the Sacral, is where her Personality Sun sits. Her Saturn Return landed on the channel her Sun is in.

The transiting chart did more than touch that one gate. Its own Design side, calculated for 26 March 2003, carries gate 20, Now, in the Throat — and from there it completes two channels against her own natal chart: the channel of Awakening (20-10) against her own natal gate 10, and the channel of Charisma (20-34) against her own natal gate 34. Gates 10 and 34 are not two scattered points in her chart — together they are already her own channel, 10-34 Exploration, sitting inside the G Center-Sacral-Spleen-Root group that her Split leaves cut off from the Throat. Gate 20 is one of only two gates, with gate 62, through which that connection could ever close on her own design, and she was born with neither. On the one chart in her record that supplies it, she created a format and pitched it herself.

Five weeks earlier, on 20 May 2003, America’s Next Top Model premiered on UPN. Banks is credited as the format’s creator and as an executive producer, and she pitched the concept to the network herself. The show was produced through her own company, credited on screen as Ty Ty Baby Productions from 2003 to 2006, then Bankable Productions, then The Tyra Banks Company. It ran for twenty-four cycles and 315 episodes across three networks.

Creator credit, executive producer credit, and her own production entity, all at once, at twenty-nine. That is the owner’s seat rather than the talent’s seat, and it is a different business entirely: the talent is a cost line that gets renegotiated, and the format is an asset that gets licensed.

Read against the mechanics, the shape is not accidental. A design that needs a Throat supplied to it has two options. It can rent one, by taking presenting work inside somebody else’s structure, or it can own the structure that supplies it. And gate 5 is worth saying plainly: it is the mechanic of fixed rhythm, of a cycle that repeats on schedule. What she built was a weekly format that ran on a cycle for a decade and a half.

Ambition that has to travel through something else

The channel 32-54 Transformation runs from gate 54, Ambition, in the Root, to gate 32, Continuity, in the Spleen. It is drive to rise, paired with an instinctive read on what has staying power and what does not.

Notice what it does not touch. It does not reach the Throat, so the ambition has no direct route into speech. It does not reach the Heart, so it has no willpower motor of its own to push with. The ambition is entirely real and it has to travel through something outside her to become anything — a structure, a platform, somebody in a position to lift it.

Her 2/4 profile describes the same requirement in the language of profile lines. Line 2 is natural aptitude that has to be called out rather than marketed. Line 4 works through an established network rather than through cold reach. Her career begins exactly there: she started modeling at fifteen and signed with Elite Model Management in 1990, having been found rather than having pitched.

For a reader running their own business, this is the more useful half of her chart. If your ambition circuitry has no direct line to your Throat or your Heart, then “put yourself out there harder” is not a strategy that fits the equipment. Building or joining a structure that carries you is.

Uranus Opposition (40’s), 17 May 2017: the rented seat

Tyra Banks's Uranus Opposition chart Tyra Banks’s Uranus Opposition transit chart, age 43, calculated for 17 May 2017, 07:36 UTC.

A Uranus Opposition breaks an established pattern: the halfway point of the planet’s orbit, where a structure that has been running gets pushed toward something it was not built to hold. Hers fell on 17 May 2017 at 07:36 UTC, with transiting Uranus at gate 42, line 6 — which happens to be the same gate and line as her natal Mars. Gate 42, Growth, sits in the Sacral and carries the mechanic of finishing a cycle that has been running. The moment itself carries a Right Angle Cross of Contagion (8/14 | 30/29).

The record around that date is a precise inversion of 2003. America’s Next Top Model had been canceled in October 2015 after twenty-two cycles. VH1 revived it in December 2016 with Rita Ora presenting cycle 23 while Banks stayed on as executive producer rather than as the face. Then, on 12 March 2017, she was announced as the new host of NBC’s America’s Got Talent, replacing Nick Cannon. Season 12 premiered on 30 May 2017, thirteen days after the exact transit.

On AGT she was the hired presenter of a format she had not created and did not own. It is the one arrangement her 2003 decision had been built to avoid, and it arrived at the transit whose whole business is turning a structure inside out. She returned to host cycle 24 of her own show, which ended on 10 April 2018 — a month after the transit’s second, retrograde pass on 9 March 2018, and the end of the franchise.

Chiron Return (50’s), 18 April 2023: the open Heart, and the year she stopped hosting

Tyra Banks's Chiron Return chart Tyra Banks’s Chiron Return transit chart, age 49, calculated for 18 April 2023, 19:53 UTC.

Her Chiron Return fell on 18 April 2023 at 19:53 UTC, with Chiron at gate 51, line 2, under a Right Angle Cross of Laws (3/50 | 60/56) of its own. Chiron is not part of the standard chart display in Maia Mechanics, so while the cycle date above is computed directly by the software, the gate itself was calculated separately with the Swiss Ephemeris against her own natal Chiron rather than read off a screen.

Gate 51, Shock, sits in the Heart — the Will center — and the Heart is one of the three centers Banks has no definition in. An open Heart has no fixed supply of willpower and no standing need to hold a title. Its conditioned pattern is promising ahead of the energy available to deliver, and proving worth by holding on to a position rather than by letting it go.

The dated record sits right against it. On 17 March 2023, a month before the exact transit, it was reported that Banks would leave Dancing with the Stars before its thirty-second season; Julianne Hough was announced as co-host three days later. Banks said she wanted to focus on her business and her entrepreneurship, and to produce behind the scenes rather than work in front of the camera. In the same year her production company was renamed SMiZE Productions, after the ice cream brand she had started in 2020, and she moved to Sydney to build it, where the company now runs a flagship store at Darling Harbour.

The counter-example belongs in the same section, because it is the venture in this stretch that did not hold. Banks enrolled in Harvard Business School’s Owner/President Management course in 2011 and completed it on 17 February 2012, a three-year executive program taken in three-week blocks, and she has said she came to the school “with the Modelland dream in mind”. ModelLand, a physical attraction at Santa Monica Place, was announced in February 2019, delayed by the pandemic in March 2020, opened on 2 September 2022, and has since closed.

That is not a judgment about her ability, and the chart does not predict outcomes. It is a structural observation: a permanent physical venue is a willpower-and-capital business, sustained by commitments made a long way ahead of the revenue. An open Heart is the center least equipped to run a business on that basis, and the ventures of hers that held — a weekly format she responded to and owned, a small brand she runs hands-on — are the ones that never asked it to.

Second Saturn Return (60’s), 6 August 2032: the same two gates, together for the first time

Tyra Banks's Second Saturn Return chart Tyra Banks’s Second Saturn Return transit chart, age 58, calculated for 6 August 2032, 06:40 UTC.

She has not lived this one yet, so nothing in this section is a claim about what she will do. The mechanics, unlike the outcome, are already fixed, and they are worth putting on the record because of what they repeat.

Her second Saturn Return falls on 6 August 2032 at 06:40 UTC, with transiting Saturn back at gate 15, line 5 for a second time in her life, under a Right Angle Cross of The Sphinx (7/13 | 2/1). Its own Design side, calculated for 6 May 2032, again carries gate 20 in the Throat, again completing Awakening (20-10) and Charisma (20-34) against her own natal 10-34 Exploration channel — the identical pair her first Saturn Return completed in 2003. The same chart also completes the Beat (2-14) against her natal gate 14, the channel this article traces to her Chiron Return in 2023, later in this piece.

Neither pairing is new on its own. What is new is having both at once: of the four transits checked for this piece — both Saturn Returns, the Uranus Opposition, the Chiron Return — 2032 is the only chart where the Throat gate her Split needs and the steering gate her Beat needs are both live at the same time. Whether anything gets built in that window isn’t a question a chart can answer. That the opening exists is arithmetic, not forecasting, and it will still be true in 2032 whether or not anyone remembers this article by then.

What the Split says about who to hire

Definition tells you how much of your own process you can complete with nobody else in the room. A Split means the bridging comes from other people, and Banks’s bridge is unusually specific: gates 20 and 62, both in the Throat.

The public record shows she has never built alone. America’s Next Top Model carries her creator credit alongside Ken Mok and Kenya Barris as developers, and was produced with Ken Mok’s 10 by 10 Entertainment beside her own company. Every subsequent venture has run through a company with a production staff rather than through her personally.

For a reader with a Split, the instruction is the same and it is not about personality fit. Look at which two groups in your own chart do not connect, and which gates would join them, then hire against that gap rather than trying to close it through discipline. In Banks’s case, the people who complete the design are the ones who bring the platform, the running order, and the question to answer.

What her own gates feed into, Penta and OC16

The Penta and the Wa are not channels in anyone’s chart. I teach them as trans-auric forms: when three to five people share physical space on a regular basis, their individual auras morph into a single pentic aura that overrides personal awareness entirely. It runs on the Sacral alone, generative, with no mental, emotional or spleen awareness of its own, and it is the mechanic underneath both family analysis and small-business analysis in BG5. The Wa is the larger version of the same phenomenon, the structure conditioning a group once it crosses the ten-to-sixteen OC16 range. Neither form exists at a distance. Both require people physically together, regularly.

My own teaching names one channel, 2-14, as the single strength shared in common by the individual, the Penta and the Wa, playing triple duty across all three scales at once. Banks carries exactly half of it, and the half she carries is worth naming precisely. Gate 14, Power Skills, sits in her Sacral and is activated by her Personality Mercury. Gate 2, the Direction of the Self, in the G Center, is not in her chart on either side. She holds the fuel end of that channel without the steering end.

It is worth noting what the sky was carrying the first of the two times this article has a reason to look closely: her Chiron Return. At the exact moment of that transit, 18 April 2023, 19:53 UTC, the cycle chart’s own activations included gate 2, completing the Beat against her natal gate 14 — a month after she had announced she was leaving Dancing with the Stars to run her own company instead of hosting someone else’s format. It happens again at her second Saturn Return, covered earlier in this piece — the one chart in her record where it completes alongside gate 20 as well.

That is the same finding this article has now reached from three directions. The open Throat says the message needs a structure to speak inside. The Split says the two halves of her definition only join through gates she does not carry. And the Beat says she brings the generative power to a group without the direction component attached to it. None of those is a deficiency. Together they are a consistent specification for how a design like this converts into a business: supply the engine, and let the structure and the direction come from somewhere else.

At OC16 scale the same pattern repeats. I teach six organizing channels there, each anchoring a department: Management (45-21), Competitiveness (51-25), Direction (2-14), Logical Enforcement (50-27), Interaction (59-6) and Innovation, anchored at gate 60. Banks has none of them complete. She holds two halves and no wholes: gate 14 in Direction, and gate 60, Limitation, in Innovation. Where those anchors sit is its own answer. Management runs from gate 45 in the Throat to gate 21 in the Heart, and Competitiveness from gate 51 in the Heart to gate 25 in the G. The Throat and the Heart are the two centers her chart leaves open, so the anchors for the two most authority-shaped departments run straight through the ground she has no fixed definition in.

What she does carry is substantial, and it clusters hard. Her activated gates land in the power base of four departments, with two of them heavily weighted: eight gates feeding Logical Enforcement (5, 9, 15, 17, 18, 52, 58, 63) and six feeding Interaction (35, 41, 42, 46, 47, 64), alongside 19, 32 and 54 into Management, 34 into Competitiveness and 24 into Direction. A power base is not a department head. It is energy pulled into a department’s frequency for the benefit of whoever holds the full channel, and it only operates in person, in a group of that size, on a regular basis. Holding an anchor would be a field of potential under the same conditions, not a job title, and I am deliberate about that distinction: a channel in an individual chart is not the group strength that shares its name, and nobody should be told they are not built to run their own company because an organizing channel is missing.

Read against the record, the two heavy clusters are the interesting part. Logical Enforcement is fed by the collective logic circuit, the gates of pattern, correction and standards, and Banks has eight of them. Interaction is fed by the collective abstract circuit, the gates of experience and cycles, and she has six. The product she created and owned was a weekly format in which a panel corrected and ranked people against a standard, wrapped in an experiential elimination cycle that ran to a schedule. That is those two circuits, in that proportion, turned into a television business.

And what she did not build is equally consistent. There is no anchor in her chart to head a department of a large standing organization, and she never assembled one. The vehicles have been production companies built around a format, and latterly a small brand run hands-on, rather than an OC16 or a Wa with her at the top of it. One footnote worth noticing: the Chiron Return traced earlier landed on gate 51, Competitiveness’s own anchor gate, sitting in her open Heart, a gate she does not carry natally. The year that transit came through is the year she stepped out of the last big competition format she was presenting.

Where the profit actually was: her three open centers

My own model of profit potential holds that the commercial edge tends to sit in the open centers rather than the defined ones. A defined center answers the same way every time. An open center has no fixed way of running, takes in whatever the moment brings, cycles through every version of that pressure over years, and eventually develops a read on the terrain that a defined center in the same position never acquires.

Throat. No fixed voice means many registers, and Banks has run through more of them in public than almost anyone: the runway, the magazine cover, a daily syndicated talk show from 2005 to 2010, a judging panel, a live prime-time competition on a network that was not hers, and the owner’s register she used at Harvard. None of them is the real one that a fixed Throat would default to. Each is borrowed for the setting that actually called for it, which is why the range looks implausible from outside and is simply the mechanic from inside.

Heart. An open Heart has no standing need to defend a title, and her record keeps showing the same move. She handed cycle 23 of her own franchise to Rita Ora and stayed on as executive producer. She left Dancing with the Stars to go and work behind the camera. A defined Heart holds on to the seat, particularly when the seat is prominent. An open one is free to trade visibility for ownership, and repeatedly did.

Solar Plexus. An open Solar Plexus carries no emotional wave of its own and takes on whatever is in the room, amplified. It is an uncomfortable center to live with and an unusually accurate instrument for reading what a room is feeling. A competition format built on high-stakes eliminations, where the entire product is the emotional temperature of the people in it, is that mechanic operating at commercial scale.

Three open centers, three different exposures, and none of them is the ownership story the rest of this piece tells. That is the layer underneath: the places where her design has no fixed answer of its own are the places that turned out to be worth the most.

What to do on Monday

  1. Check whether your Throat is defined before you build a business on your personal brand. If it is open, the asset is the structure around the voice, not the voice.
  2. If you are the recognizable face of something, look at who owns the format. Creator credit, producer credit and an entity of your own are three separate things, and only the third survives a renegotiation.
  3. If your ambition circuitry does not reach your Throat or your Heart, stop trying to push harder and start looking for the structure that carries it.
  4. With a Split definition, read your own bridging gates and hire against that gap rather than treating it as a discipline problem.
  5. Before committing to anything that runs on sustained willpower and capital over years — a venue, a lease, a build — check whether your Heart is defined. If it is open, that commitment is being made by a center that has no fixed supply to back it.

Common questions

What is Tyra Banks's Human Design type?

She is a Generator with Sacral Authority, a 2/4 profile and a Split definition, calculated from an AA-rated birth record of 4 December 1973 at 7:13pm in Inglewood, California. Six of her nine centers are defined; the Throat, Heart and Solar Plexus carry no definition.

How can a television host have an undefined Throat?

An undefined Throat is not an inability to speak. It is the absence of a fixed way of speaking, so the register is taken from the setting rather than run on a current of its own. Mechanically it describes a design that is built to speak inside a structure somebody supplies, rather than to be the reliable source of a message on demand, and a weekly television format supplies exactly that structure.

What does her Split definition say about how she should be staffed?

Her defined centers fall into two groups with nothing joining them, and the only route between them runs through the Throat via gates 20 and 62, neither of which she carries. That is a staffing specification rather than a deficiency: the people who complete a design like this are the ones who bring the platform, the running order and the question to answer.

Do her major transits line up with anything real in her business record?

Closely. Her Saturn Return fell on 25 June 2003, five weeks after America's Next Top Model premiered; her Uranus Opposition fell on 17 May 2017, thirteen days before she debuted as host of a franchise she did not own; and her Chiron Return fell on 18 April 2023, a month after she left Dancing with the Stars to work on her own company.
