Ted Turner, Human Design, and the Deals He Answered Instead of Starting

Quick look: Ted Turner is filed in business memory as an initiator, the man who started the superstation and started CNN and started saying out loud what nobody else would. His chart says something more precise and considerably more useful. He was a Manifesting Generator with Sacral Authority, and every defining move of his career was a response to an asset that already existed and was being sold off, mispriced, or thrown away by somebody else.

If you have ever been told that building a business means having original ideas, his record is worth reading closely, because he had almost none. What he had was an exceptional gut for what other people were about to let go of too cheaply, and a design that could only turn that gut into action by routing it through his own sense of direction first. That combination is a business model, and unlike genius it is repeatable.

Turner died on 6 May 2026 at 87, so the chart can finally be read against a finished record. This piece stays on the business side of it: the deals, the dates, and what the mechanics explain about them.

Where this chart comes from

Most public-figure charts are guesses. Where no birth time is recorded a noon default gets substituted, and everything downstream of the minute is then presented as settled fact.

Turner’s is a real exception. Astro-Databank records his birth as 19 November 1938 at 8:50am in Cincinnati, Ohio, with the birth record in hand and a Rodden rating of AA, its highest category of confidence. The date and place are independently confirmed by the standard biographical record and by the obituaries published across NPR and Al Jazeera in May 2026.

The bodygraph here was calculated from those details with the Swiss Ephemeris, then checked activation by activation against a Maia Mechanics render. All twenty-six positions match on both sides, along with Type, Authority, Profile, Definition and the cross.

I also ran the same calculation at every hour of his birth day, to see how much of the reading actually depends on the recorded minute. Not much, as it turns out. Manifesting Generator, Sacral Authority and Single definition hold at all twenty-four hours. The 3/5 profile holds from 5am onward, so 8:50am sits well inside the band and nowhere near a line boundary. Nothing below is hedged, and that is a claim about the data, not about my confidence.

What the chart produces: a Manifesting Generator with Sacral Authority, a 3/5 profile, a Single definition, and the Right Angle Cross of Contagion 4 (14/8 | 29/30). Four of the nine centers carry definition. The Ajna, G Center, Sacral and Throat are defined. The Head, Heart, Spleen, Solar Plexus and Root are all open.

Three channels are defined, and they matter more than the type label:

• 43-23, Structuring, from the Ajna to the Throat. Individual knowing that has to be put into words before anyone else can use it.
• 8-1, Inspiration, from the G Center to the Throat. Self-expression turned into public contribution.
• 2-14, The Beat, from the Sacral to the G Center. Power skills feeding the direction of the self.

The gut, not the vision

There are four motor centers in a bodygraph. Three of Turner’s were open. The Heart, the Root and the Solar Plexus carried no definition at all, which left the Sacral as his single source of consistent energy.

That is the structural fact the whole career runs on. His only motor could not reach his Throat directly. It had to travel Sacral to G Center along 2-14, then G Center to Throat along 8-1. Every unit of usable energy he had was routed through his own sense of direction before it could become anything anyone else could see.

Treat that as a specification, not a defect. A design built this way cannot put reliable energy behind somebody else’s plan, because no path runs from the motor to the world without passing through the question of whether the work is his. It also accounts for something the business press filed under personality. Turner was a difficult employee and a formidable owner. Those are the same mechanic seen from two sides.

Sacral Authority is the other half. It produces a gut yes or no to whatever is already in front of you. It runs on its own clock, it cannot be applied to a hypothetical, and it needs an actual thing in the room. Look at what he bought and the pattern holds every time:

• 1963. His father’s billboard company, already being sold off by somebody else.
• 1968. WAPO in Chattanooga, a radio station already on the market.
• 1969 to 1970. WJRJ channel 17 in Atlanta, a failing UHF station the market had already written down, acquired through the Rice Broadcasting merger.
• 1976. The Atlanta Braves, a team on its way out of the city.
• December 1976. Satellite transponder capacity that was sitting underused.
• 1978. The WTBS call letters, bought from a student-run station at MIT for fifty thousand dollars.
• 1986. The MGM film library, which everybody else in the deal treated as the ballast rather than the cargo.

Not one of those is an invention. Every one is a gut response to something already on the table and visibly mispriced. The world spent forty years calling him a visionary, and what it was actually watching was a Sacral response with good aim.

March 1963: the deal he answered

The clearest proof that his authority was responsive rather than initiating is also the first deal he ever made, and it was made under conditions nobody would choose.

In early 1963 his father, Ed Turner, bought the Atlanta division of General Outdoor Advertising for roughly four million dollars, financed with debt the business could not comfortably carry. Having closed it, he then agreed to sell a large part of what he had just bought. On the morning of 5 March 1963 he took his own life at his South Carolina plantation. He was 53.

Ted Turner was 24. What he did next is the most instructive thing in his record. He did not start a company. He did not have a vision. He responded to a transaction that was already in motion and moving in the wrong direction, and he set about undoing it, using tactics that were aggressive by any standard, including shifting employees and contracts so that the Atlanta operation would be worth considerably less to the buyer than the buyer had assumed. The sale was unwound. He kept the Atlanta business.

Everything he is remembered for was built on the asset base he preserved in that single response. There was no billboard business without it, no cash flow to buy radio stations with, no balance sheet to put behind a UHF station, and no superstation.

The shape of that is the inverse of the founding myth. Founders are supposed to see something nobody else sees and will it into being. Here, a 24-year-old with no plan was handed a catastrophe, felt a hard gut no about the transaction sitting inside it, and moved on that no fast enough and ruthlessly enough to keep the asset. The vision arrived later, out of what he had kept.

Turner gave his own account of the takeover and of the career it started in a Meet the Press interview recorded around the publication of his memoir in 2008, held in NBC News’s archive.

Gas, steering wheel, and the thing he said out loud

In the BG5 reading of these gates, gate 14 is the material engine of a business. It is the capacity to generate resources, and its power lies in the discipline of spending in one direction at a time, not in the size of the pile. Gate 2 is the steering. It is where direction gets decided and therefore where the money gets pointed. Gate 14 without gate 2 is an engine with no steering wheel. Gate 8 is the public contribution, the point at which a direction becomes something customers, vendors and the market can actually see. Gate 1 is the identity feeding it.

In a small business those functions are usually spread across several people, and getting them to agree is most of the work. Turner carried all four gates himself, wired into two channels that terminate in the same place. The Sacral engine at gate 14 runs into the direction at gate 2, and the identity at gate 1 runs out through the contribution at gate 8. Engine, steering and public expression, in one man, with no committee in between.

His spending record is that unidirectional pattern almost to the letter. He put the billboard cash flow into radio, then everything into one failing television station, then everything into satellite distribution, then everything into news, then everything into a film library. At no point did he run two big bets at once. When the engine and the steering sit in the same pair of hands, that concentration looks like recklessness from outside and behaves like focus from inside.

This is also the sharpest way to read what happened in 1996. He did not lose the engine in that deal. He stayed wealthy. What he handed over was the steering.

The channel that made him early

The 43-23 Structuring channel is the other half of the picture. It carries individual knowing, the kind that arrives already complete and sounds strange until the market catches up. Gate 43 is Insight in the Ajna. Gate 23 is Assimilation in the Throat. The channel’s job is to take a knowing that has no precedent and find language for it, and the reliable social consequence of that, before the language lands, is being treated as a crank.

When Turner told the cable industry in May 1979 that he intended to run news twenty-four hours a day and that news itself would be the draw, the reaction was ridicule. CNN was nicknamed the Chicken Noodle Network before it had aired a single minute. That is the ordinary reception for a defined 43-23 speaking early. The ridicule tells you something about timing and nothing at all about whether he was right.

The practical lesson in a 43-23 is not to speak less. It is to expect the gap, and to make sure the business can survive the length of it. Turner’s could, but only just, and only because the billboard and superstation cash flow was carrying the losses while the market caught up.

The Heart that had every gate and no circuit

This is the most striking single thing in his chart, and it is the one that explains the ending.

The Heart center, sometimes called the Will or Ego center, has exactly four gates: 21, 26, 40 and 51. It is the seat of willpower, of the sense of one’s own worth, and of the capacity to make a promise and hold it by force of will alone.

Turner had all four of them activated. Gate 21, The Hunter, on his Personality Saturn. Gate 26, The Egoist, on his Personality Mercury. Gate 40, Aloneness, on his Design Mercury. Gate 51, Shock, on his Design Saturn.

And the center was completely open, because not one of the four partner gates those channels require was anywhere in his chart. Gate 21 needs 45 and never had it. Gate 26 needs 44 and never had it. Gate 40 needs 37 and never had it. Gate 51 needs 25 and never had it. Four loaded gates, four missing partners, zero channels, an open center.

The channel gate 21 sits in is called Money. He carried the gate his entire life and never once carried the circuit.

That reads like a flourish and it is not one. An open Heart has no fixed internal supply of willpower and no settled sense of its own worth, which makes it the spot where a person is most persuadable about what they are worth. Every gate being loaded means those themes stayed permanently live for him, pressing all the time, never resolving into a capacity he could supply himself. A full tank, no driveshaft.

Set that against the one decision Turner spent the rest of his life calling his mistake, and against the fact, established below, that the two transits which did temporarily complete a Heart channel for him both landed on the defining moments of his later career.

Saturn Return (30’s), 1967 and 1968

A Saturn Return arrives roughly every twenty-nine and a half years, when transiting Saturn comes back to the exact degree it held on the day you were born. Astrology and BG5 read it the same way: the end of whatever structure you have been operating inside, either renegotiated on your own terms or broken outright.

Turner’s first came in three passes, on 27 June 1967, 22 August 1967 and 7 March 1968, the multiple crossings being the ordinary consequence of retrograde motion. At all three, transiting Saturn sat in gate 21 line 3, The Hunter, inside the Heart center his own chart leaves open. Saturn coming back to the gate of control over material territory, in a motor center he never had, is worth stating plainly before anything is made of it.

The event in that window is his first move out of his father’s industry. In 1968 he bought WAPO radio in Chattanooga, his first broadcasting property, relaunching it as WGOW with a Top 40 format on 1 January 1969. It is small in dollar terms and decisive in every other way, because it is the point at which he stopped being the custodian of what his father built and started acquiring territory of his own.

Two channels completed for the length of that return that his natal chart does not carry. The transiting gate 27 linked to his natal gate 50, forming 27-50, Preservation, running Sacral to Spleen: the circuit concerned with taking custody of something and keeping it alive. Separately, the transiting gate 55 linked to his natal gate 39, forming 55-39, Emoting, running Solar Plexus to Root, which for the duration gave definition to two of his open motor centers at once.

Set that beside what he was doing at the time. A man whose first act in business was preserving his father’s company spent his Saturn Return wired into the Preservation channel, and used the window to stop preserving and start buying. The return carried its own temporary cross too, Right Angle, on 52/58 and 17/18.

Uranus Opposition (40’s), 1978

A Uranus Opposition arrives once, around midlife, when transiting Uranus reaches the point exactly opposite where it sat at birth. It is the cycle most associated with a sudden break from an established pattern.

Turner’s came in three passes across 1978, on 2 January, 11 April and 18 October. At each, transiting Uranus was in gate 1 line 3, Self-Expression, which is not a neutral location in this chart. Gate 1 is one of his own defined gates, the G Center end of his 8-1 Inspiration channel. The planet of disruption spent a year crossing back and forth over his own channel of public contribution.

In September 1978, between the second and third passes, Turner and Reese Schonfeld committed to the plan for a 24-hour news network. Schonfeld had laid out how it could actually be operated, with an electronic newsroom, satellite distribution and a staff of roughly three hundred. Turner, who had previously dismissed the idea, responded to it. He announced it publicly on 21 May 1979 and CNN went on air on 1 June 1980.

One thing separates this return from the other three: how little of it reached him. Across all three passes the transit completed exactly one channel against his own chart, and only at the middle one. On 11 April the transiting Moon sat in gate 20 and met his natal Mars in gate 57, completing 20-57, The Brainwave — for the eleven and a half hours it takes the Moon to cross a gate. The January pass completed nothing of his: the two channels that formed then, 15-5 Rhythm and 18-58 Judgment, were built entirely from transiting gates, and they defined two of his open centers, the Spleen and the Root, from outside. The October pass completed nothing at all.

I would rather report it at that resolution than round it in either direction, because the detail is the point. Half a day of the fastest-moving body in the chart is the whole of what this transit completed in him, and it fell five months before the decision. The CNN decision did not originate inside Turner. It came from Schonfeld walking in with an operating plan, and from a Sacral Authority with something concrete in front of it. The biggest commitment of his life got made in a window when his own design was, almost entirely, being defined by something external. That is the condition a responder needs. It is not the condition a self-generating visionary would need at all.

What that September decision produced went on air twenty-one months later. CNN’s own archive holds the first broadcast.

The return’s temporary cross was Right Angle, on 38/39 and 48/21.

Chiron Return (50’s), 1989

Chiron’s orbit is eccentric enough that its return does not arrive on a fixed schedule the way Saturn’s does. Turner’s fell on 6 July 1989, at 50, with the transit in gate 52 line 6, Stillness, in the Root center, which was open in his chart. Stillness, for a man whose defining trait was never stopping. The irony is not the point, so here is the datable part.

The March 1986 MGM purchase had nearly destroyed him. He paid $1.5 billion, sold most of the studio back to Kirk Kerkorian within months for around $480 million, and kept the film, television and cartoon library. The debt was severe enough that in 1987 a consortium of thirty-one cable companies assembled by John Malone of TCI paid roughly $562 million for 37 percent of Turner Broadcasting, and the condition attached to that rescue was that he build a new channel out of the library he had kept. TNT launched on 3 October 1988 with Gone with the Wind. By its first anniversary in October 1989, immediately after the exact Chiron Return, it was in fifty million households and generating close to $100 million in subscriber revenue alone.

The return brackets the moment the worst deal of his career was retroactively proved to be the best one. What he had been mocked for buying was the only reason the company survived what buying it had cost.

Three channels completed that his chart does not carry, and one of them is the reason this section matters. The transiting gate 44 linked to his natal gate 26, forming 26-44, Surrender, running Spleen to Heart. That is the first time in this analysis that one of his four loaded Heart gates got its missing partner. The 26-44 circuit is the merchant’s channel, the one concerned with reading what something from the past is actually worth and selling it forward on that read.

For the length of his Chiron Return, the man with the permanently open Heart had a live Heart circuit, and it was specifically the one about correctly pricing an asset out of the past. What was happening in the business at that exact moment was a forty-year-old film library, bought at a price everyone called insane, turning into the thing that saved the company.

The other two channels were 10-57, Perfected Form, transiting gate 10 into his natal 57, and 59-6, Mating, transiting gate 59 into his natal 6. The return’s own cross was a Juxtaposition, on 39/38 and 51/57, the only one of his four returns not to carry a Right Angle.

Second Saturn Return (60’s), 1997

A second Saturn Return, at roughly 58, is a different event from the first. The first is usually about leaving a structure that no longer fits. By the time the second arrives a person has generally spent thirty years building their own, and it tends to arrive as that structure being ratified, or handed over.

Turner’s fell on 12 April 1997, once more in gate 21 line 3, exactly where it had been in 1967 and 1968.

Two events sit either side of it, roughly six months before and five months after, and together they are the whole man. On 10 October 1996 Turner Broadcasting System merged into Time Warner and he became vice chairman of somebody else’s company, giving up operational control of what he had spent thirty-three years assembling. Then in September 1997, days after privately putting the offer to Secretary-General Kofi Annan, he used a UNA-USA Global Leadership Awards dinner where he was collecting an award to announce a gift of a billion dollars to the United Nations, at the time the largest individual philanthropic gift ever made.

Four channels completed in this window, more than in any of his other returns, and two of them wire centers he never had.

The transiting gate 25 linked to his natal gate 51, forming 25-51, Initiation, running G Center to Heart. That is the second of his four loaded Heart gates to receive its missing partner, and the only time gate 51 ever had one. The 25-51 circuit is the one concerned with being propelled out of personal concerns into something larger than oneself. He announced a billion-dollar gift, unprompted, at a dinner, inside that window.

The transiting gate 19 linked to his natal gate 49, forming 49-19, Synthesis, Solar Plexus to Root, another pair of his open motors defined for the duration. The transiting gate 46 linked to his natal gate 29, forming 46-29, Discovery, G Center to Sacral, notable because gate 29 is his Design Sun. And the transiting gate 34 linked to his natal 57, forming 34-57, Power.

Both of those are what an open Heart looks like operating at scale, in opposite directions, inside one year. His own summary of the first half of it was blunt, and he repeated it for decades: the mistake he made was losing control of the company. The AOL merger that followed in 2000 cost him roughly eight billion dollars, around eighty percent of his wealth, and he sold out of the stock in 2003.

Turner sat down with Mike Wallace for 60 Minutes in 2003, the year he sold out of the Time Warner stock, and the interview is in the program’s own archive.

The return’s temporary cross was Right Angle, on 42/32 and 61/62.

The profile and the cross

His 3/5 profile is the trial-and-error line paired with the projection line. A 3 learns by doing the thing badly first and finding out what does not work, which is discovery and not failure, and it produces a person with an unusually large catalogue of what breaks. The 5 is the line other people project expectations onto, the one summoned to solve a problem and then blamed if the solution disappoints.

Both halves are visible in the public record without needing to be forced. The failed CBS bid in 1985, the MGM purchase that had to be half-unwound within months, a career of publicly announced ventures that either worked spectacularly or did not work at all, and a nickname, Captain Outrageous, that is close to a definition of the 5 being projected onto. A 3/5 does not have a quiet career.

The Right Angle Cross of Contagion 4, built on gates 14 and 8 on the Personality side and 29 and 30 on the Design side, sits underneath all of it. Right Angle means the life runs largely on its own momentum and not on other people’s. Contagion is a fair one-word summary of what a superstation and a 24-hour news network do: take one signal and spread it until it is everywhere.

Rave Psychology

Four mechanics sit outside the bodygraph proper and describe the conditions a person’s biology actually works in. Turner’s are Hot Thirst determination, a Caves environment, a Personal perspective, and Hope motivation.

Determination: Hot Thirst. Determination describes the conditions a body takes things in under. The useful business reading of it is about pace and setting, and none of it is health advice or has any business informing anyone’s diet. What it does describe is a system that runs on intensity in concentrated bursts, not on a steady simmer. That is a fair account of how he worked: long stretches of total absorption in one bet at a time, which is his gate 14 spending pattern seen from the other side.

Environment: Caves. This is the one worth pausing on, because it looks wrong at first glance for the largest private landowner in the United States, a man who ended up holding two million acres and more than forty-five thousand bison. A Caves environment is not about the outdoors. It describes an enclosed, contained, defensible space with a controlled way in. Turner ran his companies out of a single Atlanta building, was famous for sleeping in his office during CNN’s early years, and built his later life around private reserves with gates on them. Land is not the opposite of a cave when you own all of it and control who enters.

Perspective: Personal. Perspective describes how the mind takes in the world. Personal perspective filters everything through what it means for the individual, not through abstract systems. He did not argue for cable news on the basis of a market thesis. He argued it from what he personally thought the country needed to see.

Motivation: Hope. Motivation is the engine underneath the mind. Hope aims at what something could become, not at what it might protect against. It shows up twice in his record at a scale that is hard to miss: a news network launched on the proposition that showing people the world would improve it, and a billion dollars given to the United Nations on the same premise. Neither was a defensive move. Both were bets on an outcome that did not exist yet.

Where the profit actually was: his open centers

Turner had four defined centers and five open ones. This site’s own model of profit centers argues that a person’s real commercial edge tends to sit in the open centers, not the defined ones, because an open center has no fixed way of operating. It takes in whatever is around it, runs every variation of it over a lifetime, and eventually turns that exposure into pattern recognition nobody with a defined center in the same place ever develops.

Read his record against his five open centers and a second business shows up underneath the famous one.

Head, and it is completely empty. Not one of the three Head gates, 61, 63 or 64, is activated anywhere in his chart, which is uncommon enough to be worth flagging. The Head is where mental pressure lives, and where the questions a person cannot stop asking come from. Turner had none of his own. Every question he chased arrived from outside him: Schonfeld’s operating plan, a consortium’s condition, an asset somebody else had put on the market. The man who built the world’s first 24-hour question-answering machine carried, mechanically, no questions of his own.

Heart. Covered above, and it is the reason the ending reads the way it does. Every gate loaded, no circuit, and therefore no fixed internal answer to what he was worth. That openness is a commercial advantage almost everywhere. It is a specific exposure in exactly one place: a negotiation whose entire content is what you are worth and whether you will let go. In October 1996 he was in that negotiation, and he let go.

Spleen. Three gates activated, 48 Depth, 50 Values and 57 Intuitive Clarity, and every partner absent. Gate 57 alone has three possible channels, to 20, 10 and 34, and he had none of them. The Spleen is instinct, timing and the sense of what is safe. An open one has no fixed alarm. It reads risk freshly every time and can be badly wrong about it, which is a workable description of a man who bid for CBS, bought MGM at a price that nearly ended him, and mortgaged the company to launch a news channel. Two of gate 57’s three missing partners, 10 and 34, showed up on transits, at the Chiron Return and the second Saturn Return respectively.

Solar Plexus. Three gates activated, 6 Friction, 30 Recognition of Feelings and 49 Principles, every partner absent. An open Solar Plexus takes in the emotional weather around it and amplifies it instead of generating its own. The public persona built on top of that, the Mouth of the South, the volatility, the outbursts, is what an open center does in a man who spent his life in rooms full of other people’s feelings.

Root. One gate, 39 Provocation, partner absent. The Root supplies adrenalized pressure to get things done. Open, it takes that pressure from whatever is around it and amplifies it, which produces the characteristic feeling of never having enough time and never being finished. He ran at that pace for six decades.

Five open centers, and the shape of his career sits in those, not in the four defined ones. The Sacral gave him the yes. The open ones gave him everything he was actually selling.

The setting the business actually ran in

Human Design for Business reads group size as its own mechanic, separate from any individual’s chart. A person working alone operates under different rules than two people, than three to five, and than the far larger structures where a group starts conditioning everyone inside it regardless of what their own chart is built for.

Turner’s businesses moved through the sequence in order, and unusually fast. The 1963 billboard decision was effectively Solo, one 24-year-old and a gut no. The early broadcasting acquisitions ran on a small core. CNN was designed from the outset at a scale that skipped the middle entirely: Schonfeld’s plan called for roughly three hundred staff on day one, which is not a Penta and never could be. By the time of the Time Warner merger, Turner Broadcasting employed around twelve thousand people.

That trajectory is worth noticing because it is the thing his design was least equipped for. A chart whose only motor reaches the world through its own G Center is built to run on its own direction. A structure of twelve thousand people conditions its owner as much as he conditions it, and a merger puts the steering somewhere else entirely. He built something big enough to stop being answerable to the mechanic that built it.

What this is worth to you

Five things transfer out of his record, and none of them need a billion dollars behind them.

Check where your decision actually starts. If your authority is Sacral, your reliable yes arrives in response to something concrete in front of you. Building on that is not a lesser move than having original ideas. It is a different acquisition strategy, and Turner ran it for thirty-three years without inventing a thing.

Trace the route from your motor to your Throat. If your only motor reaches the world through your G Center, work that is not yours in direction will not get your energy, and no amount of discipline changes that. Treat it as a specification for what to take on, not as a character flaw.

Count the gates in your open Heart before you sign anything that turns on holding on. Loaded gates in an open center mean the theme is live for you constantly without ever resolving. Decisions whose entire content is what you are worth are the ones to slow down, get counsel on, and never make in the room.

Expect the 43-23 timing gap. If you carry that channel you will be early and you will be laughed at, and the only real question is whether the business can fund the gap between the two.

Watch what your transits complete, not just when they land. The useful part of a return is rarely the date. It is which channel your chart does not normally carry becomes available for a while, and whether you spend that window on the thing it makes possible. Turner’s Chiron Return handed him a merchant’s circuit for eighteen months and he sold a film library with it. His second Saturn Return handed him a circuit for stepping past personal concerns and he gave away a billion dollars.
