Short answer: From 1965 to 1982, the Prince’s Palace of Monaco housed a complete five-person Penta: Rainier III, Grace, Caroline, Albert, and Stéphanie. Run the five charts together and something turns up that neither of the trios previously analyzed on this site produced: every one of the six channels a Penta actually operates on is completed inside this group. And in the same window, the public record shows a principality being run, marketed, and rebuilt out of that one household.

Where these charts come from
Public charts for famous people are usually built on a noon guess. None of these five are. Monaco announces its births with cannon fire and then puts the time in print, which makes the Grimaldis one of the best-documented families in Astro-Databank.

Each bodygraph was calculated in-house from those records using the Swiss Ephemeris, not copied from a chart site, because everything in the second half of this piece depends on comparing exact gate activations across five charts, and a few minutes of error in any one of them would quietly corrupt the comparison.
Five individual charts
Rainier III is a Manifesting Generator with Emotional authority, a 4/6 profile, and a Triple Split Definition with eight of nine centers defined, everything except the G Center. His defined channels are 64-47 (Abstraction), 61-24 (Awareness), 16-48 (Wavelength), 20-57 (The Brainwave), 26-44 (Surrender), 40-37 (Community), and 9-52 (Concentration). His incarnation cross runs Personality Sun/Earth gates 16/9, Design Sun/Earth gates 37/40, which puts both Community and skillful concentration in his own life’s work. Seven defined channels is a heavily built chart, and the one center missing from it, the G, the center of identity and direction, is exactly the territory his wife and two of his children turn out to supply.

Grace Kelly is a Generator with Emotional authority, a 1/3 profile, and a Triple Split Definition. Her defined channels are 43-23 (Structuring), 2-14 (The Beat), 26-44 (Surrender), and 59-6 (Mating). The channel to note is 2-14. In this work the 14 is taught as the material engine itself, the loaded wagon, the capacity that funds everything, and the 2 as the steering wheel, the direction that decides where those resources actually go. Grace carried the whole engine-and-steering column in her own chart, and what Monaco’s economy did in the twenty-six years after she arrived is not a bad match for what that channel is taught to do.

Princess Caroline is a Generator with Emotional authority, a 2/4 profile, and a Single Definition. Her defined channels are 46-29 (Discovery), 27-50 (Preservation), 59-6 (Mating), and 28-38 (Struggle). Two things stand out. She is the only member carrying the Discovery channel whole, and in Penta work 46-29 is the aura stabilizer, the commitment that draws the separate frequencies together and homogenizes them into one group. And her Personality Earth sits in gate 31, the influence gate, which puts the voice of leadership directly in her incarnation cross. Caroline is the child who stepped into Monaco’s first-lady role after her mother’s death, and her chart reads like she was built for exactly that seat.

Prince Albert II is a Generator with Emotional authority, a 1/3 profile, and a Single Definition. His defined channels are 26-44 (Surrender), 27-50 (Preservation), 59-6 (Mating), and 28-38 (Struggle). He and Caroline share three of four defined channels, which means the two eldest children reinforce each other’s definition rather than bridging each other’s gaps; the bridging, as we’ll see, runs between the generations.

Princess Stéphanie is a Generator with Emotional authority, a 6/2 profile, and a Split Definition. Her defined channels are 43-23 (Structuring), 2-14 (The Beat), and 59-6 (Mating). Read that again next to her mother’s chart: Grace and Stéphanie share the same two signature channels, the individual knowing of 43-23 and the engine-and-steering of 2-14. The daughter who was in the car on September 13, 1982 carries her mother’s material engine, gate for gate.

One more family-wide pattern before the group analysis: all five charts run Emotional authority. There is no one in this family designed to give a reliable answer in the moment. Clarity, for every single Grimaldi, arrives over a wave, not on the spot, and a household where all five people carry that same authority is a household where the honest answer to almost any question is “not yet.”
What a Penta actually is
A Penta is a trans-auric form. The moment three to five people are physically together, their individual auras merge into a single auric entity that dominates the room, and that entity, not any one person’s chart, is what actually runs the group. I teach it as the foundation of family analysis first and business analysis second, because the family penta is the original: the traditional household, the mom-and-pop store, the corner bakery are all the same three-to-five-person mechanic wearing different clothes. A working group that isn’t related is simply an artificial family doing the same thing.
Group size matters mechanically, and it is worth being precise here because this is the first five-person group analyzed on this site. Three people create compromise tension, the third-wheel dynamic, only two can make eye contact at a time. Four is office stability, the most comfortable and stable configuration a small group can have. Five is hierarchical tension: a five is always seeking its potential, and it carries a built-in drive to split and grow, the genetic imperative to reproduce expressed at the level of the group. Keep that in mind for the second half of this family’s story, because a five that cannot hire two more people to become two pentas will express that pressure somewhere.
The other thing to hold: the Penta runs on a specific set of channels, the stream connecting Sacral through G Center to Throat. The magnetic field of 15-5 that pulls people into a shared rhythm and culture. The aura stabilizer of 46-29 that binds the group through commitment. The material engine and steering of 2-14. The public expression of 8-1 that makes the group’s work visible. The planning of gate 7 and administration of gate 31 in the Alpha channel 31-7. The accounting and oversight of 33-13, the one place a group looks back at what actually happened. Where none of the people physically present carry a given piece of that structure, the group has a real gap in that function, and no individual talent elsewhere compensates, because the group itself is what’s missing the part.
Who was actually in the room
This is not a family connected on paper. Caroline and Albert were born inside the Prince’s Palace, announced by palace bulletin and cannon salute. All three children were raised there, and the palace was simultaneously the seat of government and, through the years of Rainier’s rebuild of Monaco’s economy, the working headquarters of what was effectively a family-run enterprise. The household had its fixed rituals of co-presence: the balcony appearance every November 19 for Monaco’s National Day, the Red Cross Ball that Grace ran as president of Monaco’s Red Cross from 1958, the International Circus Festival Rainier founded in 1974 and attended with his children (Stéphanie later became its president, succeeding her father), and weekends at Roc Agel, the family farm above the principality that Rainier and Grace bought in 1957. The full five-person window runs from Stéphanie’s birth in 1965 to Grace’s death in 1982, with the densest years before Albert left for Amherst in 1977.
The newsreel record shows exactly this household. After Albert’s christening in 1958, the cameras caught Rainier holding Caroline and Grace holding the new prince on the palace grounds, the family assembled in the same frame.
The channels none of them carries alone
Now the mechanics. Comparing each person’s incomplete, “hanging” gate activations against the other four’s activated gates surfaces fifteen channels that exist in no single Grimaldi chart and complete only across specific pairs in the shared aura. Fifteen is a wide field, so this piece concentrates on the six that matter most: the Penta’s own operating stream. Every one of the six is covered inside this family of five.
15-5, Rhythm, the magnetic field. Rainier carries gate 15 alone; Caroline and Stéphanie each carry gate 5 alone. The channel taught as the thing that pulls individuals into the group’s rhythm and holds its culture, the “this is how we do things here,” completes between father and daughters. A household that kept a fixed annual liturgy of balcony, ball, festival, and farm for decades was not improvising its culture.
46-29, Discovery, the aura stabilizer. Caroline carries it whole, and Rainier’s hanging gate 29 feeds her definition. This is the commitment channel, the one that homogenizes five separate frequencies into one body and makes the group feel like a single entity. In this family the stabilizer wasn’t a hired manager. It was the eldest child.
2-14, The Beat, the engine and the steering. Grace carried it whole, and so does Stéphanie; Caroline and Albert each hang gate 14 into it as reinforcement. In Penta teaching the 14 is the wealth gate, the capacity that pays for everything, and the 2 is the direction those resources serve. It is not an accident of storytelling that Monaco’s modern prosperity is conventionally dated from the marriage that put this channel in the palace.
8-1, Inspiration, the public relations channel. Caroline’s hanging gate 8 meets gate 1 in Grace and in Stéphanie. A Penta is designed to be a marketing machine; most of its energy funnels up into being seen. Monaco under this family was arguably the most effectively marketed square mile in Europe, and the channel that does that work completes between mother and daughter, and between the two sisters.
31-7, The Alpha. Caroline carries gate 31, the voice of influence and administration; Rainier carries gate 7, the helm, the planning function that identifies where the group goes next. The leadership channel of this Penta only exists when father and eldest daughter are in the same room. Neither holds it alone. That is worth sitting with, given how the succession of public roles in this family actually played out.
33-13, The Prodigal, accounting and oversight. Albert and Stéphanie carry gate 33, the oversight of what happened; Rainier carries gate 13, the listener, the keeper of the record, the only place a Penta looks back at the past and tallies what actually worked. Again a cross-generation bridge: the function completes between the sovereign and his two youngest.
Notice the shape of all this. The lower, generative stream completes between parents and children, and every one of the three upper channels, planning, publicity, and accounting, requires a parent and a child together to switch on. This Penta had no functional gaps, but it also had no redundancy at the top: remove the father and the group loses its 7 and its 13; remove Grace and, until Stéphanie was old enough to matter mechanically, the engine thinned out.
Beyond the operating stream, the wider field of fifteen includes 45-21, the Money channel, completing between Stéphanie’s hanging gate 45 and her mother’s gate 21, the channel taught as the management of resources for a large organized structure rather than a family; and 34-57, Power, completing between Caroline and her father. The full list is longer than any one section of a family’s life, which is roughly the point: five charts in one room is a lot of structure.
What that adds up to
Read individually, this is a family of one heavily built Manifesting Generator and four Generators, all emotional, each with real definition and real gaps. Read together, in the years they actually shared a palace, the group completes the entire operating stream a Penta runs on: rhythm, commitment, engine, publicity, planning, and accounting, plus a Money channel and a dozen other bridges besides. The teaching says a five is always seeking its potential and always carrying the pressure to split outward into something bigger. This particular five had the rare condition of no gaps in the stream while it lasted, and what it built in that window, a rebuilt economy, a global brand, an institution that survived them, is what a fully-covered Penta with seventeen uninterrupted years in one building can look like.
And the split pressure was real too. Albert left for college in 1977. The five re-formed at every National Day and every summer at Roc Agel until September 1982, when the car Grace was driving, with Stéphanie beside her, went off the road above Monaco. The five became a four in a single morning, and with her went every completion that depended on a gate only she carried: the Money channel, Logic, two of the emotional-wave bridges. A family lost a mother and a wife. The group, mechanically, also lost specific functions, and the record of the years that followed, with Caroline stepping visibly into the stabilizer and first-lady seat her chart describes, reads like the room reorganizing around exactly the structure that remained.
What to do on Monday
- If your family is your business, or your business has become your family, run the group analysis, not just five individual readings. The unit that actually operates is the merged one.
- Map your group against the six operating channels before you worry about anything else: rhythm, commitment, engine, publicity, planning, accounting. A gap there is a business problem this quarter, not a curiosity.
- Find your stabilizer, the person whose presence makes the group feel like one body. Protect their actual physical presence. In this family it was a daughter, not the sovereign.
- If every key function in your group completes across one specific person, know that before life makes you find out. Redundancy in a Penta is not bureaucracy, it is continuity.
- If your whole team runs Emotional authority, build the wave into your decision process: no same-day answers on anything that matters.
- If you are a five, respect the split drive. Growth pressure in a five-person group is mechanical, not a loyalty problem, and the clean answer is usually to grow into two groups rather than to suppress it.

What is a Penta in Human Design?
A Penta is a group of three to five people whose auras merge into a single trans-auric form whenever they are physically together. It has its own structure and its own gaps, and it exists only while those people are actually in the same space. It is used two ways in this work: as the foundation of family analysis, and as the unit of analysis for a small business.
Why does a Penta analysis apply to a royal family and not just a company?
Because the mechanic doesn't distinguish between a family at home and a team at work. A family penta is the original form, the mom-and-pop store is simply the family penta with a cash register, and Monaco under Rainier III was a family household that was also, quite literally, the management of a state and its commercial engine. Same three-to-five people, same room, same mechanics.
Why is this analysis scoped to 1965 through 1982?
Stéphanie, the fifth member, was born in February 1965, and Princess Grace died in September 1982. Those seventeen years are the window in which all five were alive and based in the same household, so that is the only window in which this specific five-person form could actually assemble.
How reliable are these birth times?
Unusually reliable.
