Short answer: A certification is a business purchase, and most coaches buy one the way hobbyists do: by brand affinity, without pricing the renewal fees, the per-seat consumables, the market saturation, or the difference between being licensed to debrief a vendor’s report and being trained in an analytical discipline you own. This guide puts every major typing-system credential on one table, cost, duration, lock-in, and what it actually authorizes, and then walks the economics the enrollment pages don’t: who else holds the same certificate, what the resulting sessions sell for, and what the economics of each path actually look like.

Before the analysis, one honest note about the bottom row, since it’s mine: BG5 is not the cheapest line on this table and doesn’t try to be, and its tuition math, deliverable schedule, and extra costs are laid out in their own article rather than compressed into a cell. What this guide adds is the context the other rows give it.
What you’re actually buying: three different products
Read the table’s last column again and you’ll see the market sells three different things under the one word “certification.”
A license to debrief. MBTI, DiSC, Insights, iEQ9, Hogan, Kolbe, Working Genius, Wealth Dynamics: a few days of training that authorize you to administer the vendor’s instrument and walk clients through the vendor’s report. The vendor keeps the instrument, the science claims, and usually a revenue stream on every profile you sell. This is a real skill and a fast start, and it’s also a distribution role: your ceiling is set by what an explained report is worth, and you can be replaced by anyone holding the same certificate.
A license to resell. The same credential, plus economics that make you a channel: Insights’ annual practitioner license and unit minimums, DiSC partner structures, PI’s requirement that your clients hold platform subscriptions. Margins can be fine; just know you’re buying a franchise-shaped business, and your advice will forever carry a metered product in its pocket.
A profession. The Narrative Enneagram’s year, astrology’s multi-level exam ladders for those who take them, and BG5’s semester structure are trainings in analysis itself: you leave able to read the underlying system, not just present its report. It costs more time, always. It’s also the only category where the thing you bought compounds, because the skill is yours rather than rented, and where a practice can price on expertise rather than on a vendor’s report plus an hour.
The saturation math nobody shows you
Enrollment pages sell taker counts as your market: 35 million CliftonStrengths takers, 12 million Insights profiles delivered. Flip the telescope. Insights also claims 18,000 accredited practitioners; Wiley claims over 3,000 DiSC partner firms; Gallup certifies thousands of new strengths coaches every year; iEQ9 claims a network of 6,000. Every one of them can deliver the identical report you’d deliver, from the identical portal, and the client knows it. That’s why debrief pricing in the big systems settles where the market data says it settles, roughly $150 to $400 a session for most, with only the scarcest senior specialists clearing $600, and why so many certified coaches quietly stop practicing: the credential made them a substitute, not a specialist.
Rare-system economics run the other way, and I’ll use my own field’s published numbers since I’ve set them out in full: analysts are observed charging $250 to $395 for an entry-level BG5 career overview and $597 to $975 for a full analysis, Ra recommended around $3,500 as the floor for a small-business engagement with an Alpha One leadership analysis, and my own start point is $10,000. Those are prices, not earnings. They tell you what this work is priced at in the market; what any individual practitioner books depends on where they live, how they market, and how many of those conversations they are willing to have. The trade is explicit: a rarer system means more educating of your market, and this whole comparison series exists partly because of that. In exchange, you are not one of eighteen thousand people selling the same PDF. In a small city you may be the only one doing this work at all, and specialist scarcity, not certificate possession, is what the higher bands price.
Two more line items before any enrollment, in any system. Renewal and consumables: total the annual license, recertification, and per-profile costs over five years, because a $2,500 certificate with $795-a-year renewal is a $6,500 five-year purchase before your first client. And the earning schedule: almost every path on the table is pay-in-full, then market yourself. The exception I teach inside is staged by design, sellable deliverables opened up semester by semester, under a strict disclose-you’re-a-student rule, which is both a consumer protection and a cash-flow answer to how anyone affords a longer training. Whatever path you pick, ask the vendor the same question: when am I allowed to earn, and what am I allowed to call myself while I do?
Choosing with your own mechanics, not just the math
I’ll end where my certification ROI piece ends, because it applies to every row of the table, including mine: the arithmetic tells you whether a path can work; it cannot tell you whether it’s correct for you. Coaches are exactly the population most prone to collecting credentials as reassurance, and a shelf of certificates that were never correct to buy is its own kind of debt. If you already work with your design, you know what I’ll say: run the decision through your own strategy and authority, not through the brochure, and if paying for any of this would put you at real financial risk, don’t. A training entered correctly buys you a discipline you keep; one entered for reassurance buys you a certificate, and no price makes that a good trade. If the analytical-profession category is the one calling you, the gap between knowing mechanics and having a business is where I’d start reading, and the buyer-side guide will show you exactly how your future clients will be taught to shop you.
What to do on Monday
- Total the five-year cost of any certification you’re considering: tuition, renewals, licenses, consumables, platform fees. Compare paths on that number, never the sticker.
- Classify what’s being sold: debrief license, resale channel, or profession. All three are legitimate. Only one compounds.
- Look up how many people hold the credential you want, then search your own city for them. That’s your substitution risk, priced in an afternoon.
- Ask every vendor when you’re allowed to start earning and what you must disclose while training. The answer tells you how the economics were designed, and for whom.
- Then close the spreadsheet and run the decision through your own authority. The math qualifies a path; only your mechanics can choose one.

Common questions
How much do assessment certifications cost across the market?
At this writing, published figures run roughly: MBTI $2,995 for four days; Everything DiSC about $1,995 to $3,995 for a two-week blended course; Gallup's strengths-coach course $7,700 for under a week plus an exam and supervised practice; iEQ9 Enneagram accreditation around $1,800 to $2,200 for four days; The Narrative Enneagram $2,695 to $6,595 across roughly a year; Hogan $3,050; Working Genius $2,495 for one day; Kolbe by quote with a $795 annual renewal; Insights Discovery around £3,800 to £4,300 plus an annual license; Gene Keys' Guides Program $950 self-paced. BG5 business certification runs multiple semesters, and I've published its cost-and-earning math separately.
What does an assessment certification actually license you to do?
In most systems: administer the vendor's instrument and debrief the vendor's report, using the vendor's materials, sometimes with an annual fee to keep the license. That's a real and sellable skill, but it's a distribution role, and it's why per-debrief pricing in saturated systems settles at commodity rates. The longer trainings, the Enneagram schools, the astrology exam ladders, BG5's semester structure, are a different purchase: they train an analytical practice you own, rather than renting you a report to explain.
Which certifications have ongoing costs or lock-in?
Check three mechanisms before enrolling anywhere. Renewal fees: Kolbe recertifies annually at $795. License-plus-consumables: Insights charges an annual client-practitioner license and sells profiles in units, with distributor minimums that can run to thousands of units. Platform subscriptions: PI is company-subscription software, and Wealth Dynamics credentials live inside a membership platform. In BG5, the license and software are likewise sold separately from tuition, which I say plainly because every path has carrying costs and the honest comparison includes them.
What's the market-saturation picture per system?
Insights claims 18,000 accredited practitioners. Wiley claims over 3,000 DiSC partner firms. Gallup trains thousands of strengths coaches every year against 35 million test-takers, and iEQ9 claims over 6,000 coaches. Those takers are your market, but those practitioner counts are your competition, mostly all selling the same vendor report. Rare-system economics work differently: fewer practitioners, more explaining to do, and far easier differentiation once you're established as the specialist.
