Building a Practice

Human Design Transits and Timing Your Visible Work

Most practitioners approach their calendar as a discipline problem. How often should I post, how many emails a week, can I hold a schedule. Those are the wrong questions to start with, and I have written elsewhere about the mechanics that decide your cadence.

This is a different question. Not how often, but when. Which day do you send the thing, hold the webinar, open the doors, walk onto the stage.

Human Design has a real answer to that, and almost nobody in this field uses it.

The bodygraph mandala is a calendar

That sounds mystical, and it is simply our solar cycle, 365 days every year, the same repeating themes moving through the same wheel like clockwork. When you look at the transits, you are reading time. You are reading the effect of time.

Seventy percent of any transit comes from the Sun, grounded into the Earth. If it were not grounded into the Earth it would simply keep going out into space. That Sun and Earth pairing carries the core principle of what is bombarding all of us on a given day, and the most practical part of it to work with is the line quality. Every hexagram has six lines, so the transiting Sun moves through six line qualities in sequence. Ra called that the Rave week.

The first thing that ruins the tidy version of this advice is the arithmetic. The Rave week has six days. The calendar week has seven. The line days do not line up with your weekdays, they come and go at different times of the week and they are not consistent. So there is no permanent Tuesday answer here. Some days you get the quality you wanted and some days you do not, and because I teach weekly, my classes land on every one of these days eventually.

What you can do is choose the date of the things that matter.

Lower trigram prepares, upper trigram goes out

If you remember nothing else from this, remember it this way. Lines one, two and three are more personal. Lines four, five and six are more transpersonal. That single split does most of the work.

The first three are preparation days for the rest of the week. The fourth and fifth are where you have real influence with others. The sixth is the official day of rest in Human Design terms, for evaluation.

First line day. The researching and chameleon day. This is the investigation day, the foundation day, the day to get your ducks in a row. On a first line day you are trying to get prepared, not trying to get things done. If you actually need the webinar delivered, the task finished, the job closed, you are going to be less successful. I would not intentionally try to get people onto a webinar on a first line day. What it does buy you is that when a fourth line day arrives and you are meeting people your network introduced you to, you are prepared to the last detail and you can genuinely influence that opportunity.

Second line day. This is the moment you become visible in the transit. The second line is unaware and yet it is there, projecting out naturally. It is about being called, being pulled, being recognized or responded to. That is why this day carries an advantage for Generators and Projectors, because it brings out more opportunities to respond to something or be called out on something.

Third line day. The most dangerous day of the Rave week, and the most material. This is the day things bump into each other. Coffee spills, software does not work, technology is on the fry, you misspeak. Trial and error, bonds made and broken. Ra said to be careful with it, and Linda Bonnell at the IHDS put it to me this way: if you like a little bit of risk, if you do not mind things going wrong, then what to do, it is what it is.

I would not schedule anything super important or anything that puts me in the spotlight on a third line day. It is a wonderful day for alchemy and for trying new things. I have done plenty of profit potential coaching webinars on third line days and I quite like them, partly because my own conscious personality is a three and I am happy to ask a question that turns out to be off target and let the client correct me into something better.

Fourth line day. The most powerful day of the Rave week, bar none. This is where you have stepped up into the upper trigram and the transpersonal potential opens. It is the day you externalize your familiarity, your friendship capacity, your ability to have influence with people who already know you. It is the day for responsive outreach, for getting back to someone who reached out, for let us go for coffee, for the phone call. It is also give and take rather than pure kindness, and it can swing between friendliness and meanness, so do not take a bit of backlash personally.

One correction I gave a student who asked me directly about this. She had understood the fourth line day as the perfect day for social media posts, articles, blog posts and newsletters. That depends entirely on what your social media actually is. A lot of people haphazardly add on others whom they do not know, and just because somebody is in your network does not mean you have influence with them. If your following is mostly strangers, reaching out on a fourth line day may not help you at all. Personal phone calls might serve you far better.

Fifth line day. The peak of the week’s energy, and the day of practical application. Everybody is speculating about everybody else. The fifth line is projection, and if you are not being practical, the world explodes on you. Ra, a fifth line himself, said to hide on fifth line days, because this is when people lose their reputations and get burned at the stake. The exception is when it is practical for you to broadcast your message out into the world.

This is my day. I am a 3/5 with nine fifth lines, and I schedule my big deals here. I notice the difference in the quality of my own teaching on fifth line days. I use them to reach out into the stranger world, which is where my work lives anyway. Around sixty percent of the people watching my YouTube channel are not subscribed, so I know they are not familiar and not friends. If I am starting a new class and the option is available to me, I lean toward the fifth line day.

Sixth line day. Rest, and the widest, most objective view you can get on what happened during the rest of the week. Ra’s recommendation is to look back across the previous five days of transit. It is a day to be on the roof, to sit on the fence, to observe rather than decide or act. I stay away from putting anything on the calendar here on purpose. My own version of it is driving up to the highest point near me, looking down over the valley with my dogs, or taking my daughter to water, because I am a mountains person and that is what rest actually is for this body.

Which days favor which types

The line qualities are not neutral across types.

The first three days, and particularly the second and third, are more of an advantage to Generators and Projectors. Those are the days that bring you something to respond to or something to recognize, because you either get called out or something bumps into you.

It gets easier for Manifestors and Manifesting Generators once the week moves into the transpersonal phase. On the fourth, fifth and sixth line days there is more room to engage, more room to inform your network or inform strangers, more available activity for a design that is here to initiate.

Reflectors are running a different clock entirely. Lunar Authority needs the moon’s full transit through the design, roughly twenty eight and a half days, so all sixty four hexagrams get activated and the decision becomes trustworthy. The advice I give Reflectors about anything that is not immediately pressing is simple. Push it off. The more you push it off the better, so you get your full cycle. And when the mind says the ticket will be gone, the festival is in three weeks, I cannot wait, the honest answer is often that the opportunity was not yours.

The line day is never the whole picture

I want to be careful here, because this material gets turned into superstition very quickly.

It is not about obeying the transits. The transits are not your life. What you are doing is working with what is moving through you precisely because you do not identify with it as you. You cannot expect great things just because the transit looks great. You still have to run it through the only real filter: is it right for me, is it aligned, is it authentic, is it true.

For anything genuinely important, do not stop at the line quality. Run a chart of that day against your own design and look at the whole picture, because a transit only becomes personal where it meets an activation you already carry. When I was invited to speak in front of eight hundred people, which was a great many strangers all at once for me, they gave me four possible dates and I picked the second one based on what I saw in that transit as a whole, not on the line quality alone.

I stack the deck where I can. I look at more than the bodygraph for it, and I check my own energetic availability before I commit to anything big. Other people do not need any of this. Somebody asks them if this is the day, they get a yes in the body, and off they go.

And sometimes you simply do not get the day you wanted. I was asked to run webinars promoting a new platform, picked my slot, and was told no, not that time, not that day, what about this one. I slept on it. There was no genuine hard no in my body, no real discomfort in the form, so I went with their date. It was not what my mind said was ideal. I am a three. Sure, let us give it a try.

Choosing a launch date for a client

This is one of the more valuable things you can do for a client once you can read a transit, and it needs to be done carefully.

You can help someone plan for or select a date for a book launch, a talk, a speech, a mailing, a new venture. What counts for a business is the signature, the formality of the legality. The moment you sign the contract, register the entity, put your name to the thing. That is the birth of the business, and it is worth treating it that way.

Some dates carry more than others. Gate 14 and the 2-14 are the engine that jump starts a business, a genuine powerhouse of power skills, and it is a coveted time to begin something. That is exactly the kind of thing you might watch for when picking a start date.

Two rules I hold to, and I would ask you to hold to them as well. Never tell a client what to do. Give them options. I quite like this day for you because of this and this, and on the other hand there is this day because of that. Then hand it back so their own Authority does the weighing, not their mind and not yours. And always speak in may, could and might. There are no guarantees unless you are psychic and can literally see the thing happening.

You are not forecasting anyone’s fate. You are pointing at the weather and letting them decide whether to sail.

Common questions

Which day is best for sending a newsletter or posting to social media?

A fourth line day is the most powerful day of the Rave week for reaching your network, because that is the day you can externalize familiarity and friendship. But it only works if those people actually know you. A lot of people haphazardly add others they do not know, and just because somebody is in your social media network does not mean you have influence with them. If your feed is full of strangers, a fourth line day may not help. Personal phone calls might serve you better, and strangers belong to the fifth line day.

Can I build a fixed weekly posting schedule out of the daily line qualities?

Not a fixed one. There are only six days in the Rave week and seven days in the calendar week, so the line days drift. They come and go at different times of the week and they are not consistent. You can use them to choose the date of something that matters. You cannot use them to build a permanent Tuesday habit.

Is it a mistake to launch on a third line day?

Not automatically. Third line days are the days when technology fries, coffee spills and Murphy's Law shows up, so it is not the day I would choose to be in the spotlight or do anything super important. It is a great day for alchemy and for trying new things. I have run plenty of profit potential coaching webinars on third line days and quite liked them. It is a risk question, not a rule.

Should I tell a client which day to launch their business?

Give options, never instructions. I like this day for you because of this and this, and on the other hand this day because of that, and then hand it back to them so their own Authority weighs it. Speak in may, could and might. There are no guarantees, and the moment you speak definitively about a date you have taken over someone else's decision.
