Building a Practice

Human Design for Executive Coaches: Inside the Alpha One Analysis

Most coaches who ask me about specializing in executive work are asking a positioning question. They want to know how to move up market, away from general life coaching and toward the people running things. That is a fair question, but Human Design answers it mechanically rather than as a marketing exercise. There is a specific set of mechanics behind leadership, a specific analysis built on top of those mechanics, and a specific economic reason why the people at the top of a hierarchy will pay for coaching while the people at the bottom will not.

This is the work Ra Uru Hu called Alpha One. It is our answer to executive coaching, and it is a distinct discipline from the team work most people think of when they hear Human Design applied to business.

The Alpha channel, and what it actually is

The channel of the Alpha is the 31-7, a design of leadership for good or bad. It connects gate 7 in the G center, the role of the self in interaction, up to gate 31 in the throat center, the gate of influence and the gate of leading. Both gates carry leadership qualities, which is why together they make a design of leadership. These are the people who are designed to lead and who can lead. It still has to be correct for them.

Two things about this channel matter enormously for anyone coaching leaders.

The first is that it is projected. There is no motor energy running to the throat here. Collective logic is starved for energy in general, because the gates pointing into it point at non-motors. So this kind of leadership cannot initiate itself into position. It has to be recognized. It has to be selected. It has to be invited. Collective leadership always has to ask permission of the people who are going to be led, and it needs buy-in from them. That is the democratic quality of it. These are the people who are seen and recognized in order to lead, and there is no raw power in the design at all. Sway is a better word than power. This is a being designed to have other people buy into their view of where things are going.

The second is that gate 7 is a role gate, an identity gate, and Ra was clear that you cannot really grasp the alpha without understanding its role. The identity role means that the collective is here to be the leader. That is all it means. And because it is a role gate, it carries variations. You might be an authoritarian first line, a democrat second line, an anarchist third line, and so on through the lines. Your particular variation of leadership is sitting in your lines in gate 7, whether or not you have the gate at all.

This is the piece that makes executive coaching possible in the first place. Everyone has everything. If the channel is open in you, leadership is flexible rather than absent, and it is a place where you are learning about your own way to be in charge. So the Alpha One analysis is not gated behind whether the client happens to carry the 31-7. It is analysis plus mentoring, guiding somebody to stand up and be the alpha they came here to be.

I will use myself as the example, because it is the one I am allowed to use. I have gate 7 as an anarchist in the mind, and a 3/5 profile, so my body gets seen as a general, someone who can rise to the occasion when there is a requirement for somebody to step up. My own tendency is to abdicate when that is correct, letting other people step up, because that is part of what my design is here to do. If I am recognized and invited and I am clear, then yes. That is a completely different coaching conversation from someone whose design pushes them to grab the wheel.

Alpha One work is not Penta work

This is the distinction that keeps my certification students from selling the wrong service.

Engineering the team around an alpha is business Penta work. It is group mechanics. In the larger group framework, three Pentas of three to five people plus the alpha is what creates an organizing group of sixteen, and the alpha at the top of that is by nature designed to work outside the group, not sitting in aura with everyone all day, but interfacing with each team lead one at a time or through a chain of command.

Alpha One analysis is the other thing entirely. It is one-on-one with the individual leader. When my students pick a final project, I tell them the same thing every semester. If you want to specialize in business, get a real business, in person if possible, and do the Penta work. If you only want to work with individuals, one-on-one, executive coaching or consulting, that is a totally different thing, and you deliver an Alpha One analysis instead. In the original training, Ra spent three years on this, and every person he certified had access to Penta dynamics as well as Alpha One training. In the current BG5 path, focusing on the alpha one is what semester three of certification is about.

Students arrive at this on their own, too. One certified coach in my mentoring group put it to me exactly this way. All the team stuff is great, but if the alpha one is not on board with it, let alone doing their own work first, then the inertia of moving a whole team takes far more energy. So she wanted to work the alpha ones first, and only then bring the team on board for the ones who wanted to run with it. That sequencing instinct is correct, and it is precisely why the two services exist separately.

A delegation problem, read mechanically

Here is a case that came up in my ICF group certification coaching program, kept general because it is not my story to identify.

An executive coach brought her problem to the table. Her client was a business owner who kept losing CEOs. He ran four different corporations and could not keep his fingers out of the pie, and the CEOs kept leaving. She brought it to the group as a coaching question. How do we coach this owner to let go of some of the control and delegate?

Mechanically, this is what happens with the 45-21. That strength is management, and it sits at the top of the hierarchy. Gate 45 homogenizes people through education, and gate 21 is the implementation of control mechanisms so that everyone below falls in line. There are no mirror traits anywhere in the bodygraph for the 45 or the 21. Nothing compares to them, which is part of why they sit where they sit. It is almost as if they were grafted on in order to be in charge. And the general problem with this kind of human being is that they have a genuinely hard time letting go of control.

The useful recommendation is structural rather than motivational. In a larger organization it is actually more beneficial to have someone in the 45 seat and someone in the 21 seat rather than one person holding both. The traits that feed the 45 are one set of people, and the traits that defer to the 21 are another set, and there are real friction points between them even inside that single management power base. Splitting the role across two people is what the mechanics of a large business call for anyway, so it is hardly a compromise with a controlling owner.

I say this as someone who has the 21 as a third line. It is correct for me to be in control of implementation, and in a larger corporation I am not the one with the full strength to be in charge. If someone micromanages me, I will feel it. And if I take control without being formally recognized and invited, I will meet anger the moment someone tells me I cannot do that. Reading the shadow of your own management traits is what lets you coach somebody else’s without moralizing at them.

Why the money sits at the top

There is an influence economics buried in gate 31 that explains the price point of this specialty.

Gate 31 is here to attract attention to leadership. To be influential in the collective sense you have to take in other collective rules and structures, because you need to understand them. Being influenced is not the same as being controlled or handled or led; it is being guided. And in order to be influential you need to be influenced properly, which is where the right credentials, the right rooms, the right shoulders to rub come in.

Follow that through to your practice. The people who pay the most for consultancy are the people who have already been trained to be at the top of a hierarchy. If you are at the bottom rung, on the ground floor, you are not going to pay somebody to teach you how to become influential. Once you have worked your way up and you are in charge of other people, then hiring a consultant or an executive coach makes sense, because you have already made it. The question changes from how do I get influence to how do I fine tune and hone the influence I have.

That is the whole positioning argument, and it is mechanical. When I read a chart and I see someone whose design points at advising middle management around human capital, I tell them to go into executive coaching rather than life coaching if they want to stay financially healthy in this game.

What this means for your practice

If you are building a Human Design practice and executive work appeals to you, the specialty is real and it has a named methodology behind it. Learn the 31-7 properly, including the line variations in gate 7, because that is where a client’s own way of leading is written. Learn the 45 and the 21 as separate seats rather than one blob called management. Get clear on whether the engagement in front of you is Penta work on a team or Alpha One work with one person, because those are different deliverables sold to different buyers.

And hold the projected nature of collective leadership in your own body while you do it. The alpha is the true modern leader, and that leadership has to be recognized and selected. So does yours.

Common questions

What is an Alpha One analysis?

It is the Human Design answer to executive coaching. Ra Uru Hu coined the term. It is one-on-one analysis and mentoring of the person at the top of a business, guiding them to stand up and be the alpha they came here to be, whether or not they carry the Alpha channel in their own chart. In the BG5 certification path it is the focus of semester three.

Is Alpha One analysis the same as Penta or team work?

No. Engineering the team around an alpha is business Penta work. Alpha One analysis is one-on-one work with the alpha figure themselves. When my students choose a final project, working with a real business is a Penta project, and working with an individual leader is delivered as an Alpha One analysis instead.

Do I need the Alpha channel to lead?

No. Everyone has everything. The 31-7 is where leadership is fixed, but if it is open in you it is simply flexible rather than absent, and it is a place you are learning about your own way to be in charge. Reading your lines in gate 7 shows you the variation of leadership that belongs to you.

Why is executive coaching priced differently from general life coaching?

Influence mechanics. The people who pay the most for consultancy are the ones already trained to be at the top of a hierarchy. Someone on the ground floor does not need a consultant to become influential. Someone who has already made it is buying help to fine tune the influence they already have.
