Building a Practice

Human Design for Business Consultants: The Mechanics That Build the Practice

Most advice about building a consulting practice is about marketing. Niche, website, referrals, pricing tiers. None of that is wrong, and none of it is the reason anybody hires you. People hire you because they have painful problems. Providing solutions to their problems is what brings you the money.

So the real question for anyone building a Human Design business practice is what, mechanically, you will be able to do for a client on the day they show up, rather than how you will be found. That is a question about your toolkit, and the toolkit is specific.

The training is designed to pay for itself while you are still in it

The thing I want new consultants to understand first is the timeline. In semester one of the BG5 Career and Business Consultant certification, by the end of it you are going to be able to deliver a BG5 career design overview. That means then that within ten weeks you should be properly equipped to start making a return on your investment.

You do not build the practice after certification. It gets built in parallel with the training.

There is a condition attached, and I say it in the first class every time. You do have to put in the work. If you do not practice, you are not going to get good at this. Start with yourself, experiment with it, then practice on anybody who is willing, family and friends included. You cannot advertise that you are certified until you have the certificate in hand, so you are still a student while you practice, and that is fine. The point is repetition, because consulting is speaking. Sometimes people have the illusion that they know everything, and then they try to talk it and it does not make sense to a person.

I also tell people this: if you have not had a career design analysis done for yourself, get one. How are you going to do this work if you have not had it done?

The first shift: you are not teaching, you are compressing

There is a shift in identity that has to happen before any of the mechanics matter, and it is the difference between a hobbyist and a highly paid consultant.

The moment you can offer your value in shortcutting a human being’s ability to grasp what is most important for them to understand, you up your value in the world. Instead of a client having to study for ten years to grasp everything, you shortcut it for them. That time compression is what is incredibly valuable to busy entrepreneurs, career people, CEOs, business people, whoever it is you are going to serve.

So you are interpreting the chart, not teaching the system. In final assignments and in client work I ask people to drop the jargon and the trait numbers entirely. This is not bingo. Numbers distract. Interpret it for them.

The language shifts too. Gate becomes trait. Channel becomes strength. Center becomes function. Aura type becomes career type. It sounds cosmetic and it is not. BG5 is not directly connected with what we would call the spiritual or awakening domain. It is business, and the goal is not to be awake. The goal is to improve the bottom line. The vocabulary exists so the material reaches people who have no interest in waking up and every interest in their profit.

Public Role: the deliverable clients cannot get anywhere else

Public Role is one of the sixteen success tools that support a career, and it is one of the pieces you learn to read and sell.

Public Role is your authentic character on the stage of this life. It is the costume of your life purpose, and it shows mechanical potentials and limitations. It comes from the profile line qualities, one conscious and one unconscious, and together those two qualities make up roughly seventy percent of the energetic imprinting of who a person is.

This is why it sells. Every other profile assessment on the market points at the conscious personality only. What they will immediately identify with, what their mind already agrees is true about them. If you are looking for the differentiating factor of what this work has to offer compared to all other assessments, it is that we can also assess, analyze, and educate the client on the unconscious.

And the unconscious half is exactly where the client is stuck. The conscious personality usually does not like the unconscious design role that other people see in them. The mind will shame, blame, guilt, and fault the unconscious aspect of the person’s own nature. A 1/3 who only wants to be seen as the authority has a real challenge with being seen as someone who makes mistakes. A 5/1 who will not universalize a message to strangers, because they insist they are not a marketer, is quietly refusing more than half of what they came here for. That conversation is a business intervention rather than a personality quiz, and it opens straight into ongoing coaching.

There are three ways to deliver it, and you pick by client and by your own design. Simple keywords you explain. A synthesis slide that weaves the conscious and unconscious qualities into sentences. Or the Public Role grid, which is more advanced and which I do not recommend using by itself without explanation, because clients look at it and go blank.

Life Work: the answer to the question they actually came in with

Public Role is how you manifest your purpose. Life Work is the overall theme of that purpose. Together they answer the biggest question people have about their job and their career, which is what is my purpose and how do I find fulfillment.

You are not telling anyone to become a plumber. You are giving them the essence of what they are here to do and how they are designed to be fulfilled by what they do with their time and energy. Ra’s image for it was a finely tailored suit that fits perfectly and feels amazing to wear. Without knowing it, a person has no way of measuring whether they are on track, so they doubt their career and their life, wondering if there is supposed to be something more, seeking and not finding, because they are steering by mind instead of by their decision making strategy.

The synthesis has four parts and they are learnable. The focus of the Public Role, which is personal, transpersonal, or steadfast. The theme of the quarter, which tells you how they fulfill their purpose, through mind, through form, through bonding, or through transformation. The overall Life Work theme. And then a sentence or two on the conscious core essence, which is where you get to be creative and where the story of their process actually comes alive.

One caution I give every student. Ra’s take was that the potential to actually fulfill your life’s work does not start to happen until after fifty, and not everyone will fulfill it in this lifetime. With sixth quality clients especially, giving them breathing room, space, and time so they do not have to figure it all out is incredibly helpful. It is not something they make happen. It is something they watch unfold.

Penta: the mechanic behind both your client’s business and your own

Base Group Five. It is the foundational building block that ensures the success of any business or work group or small team. Three to five people who between them complete the twelve core business skills necessary for success. Four people in the Penta plus the alpha, so that the fifth can lead or guide without working in the group day in and day out.

The Penta is a morphogenic field generated by physical, in aura contact on a regular basis, and it dissolves the moment people step out of aura. This is why a small business analysis needs a real, in person group. It is also why so much remote team analysis produces nothing useful.

The energy inside a Penta is unidirectional, which is the whole reason gaps matter. Reliability feeds culture. Coordination feeds commitment. Commitment and culture feed capacity. All of it flows up through the middle and then out through communication and action, in one of three ways. The moment you have a gap, you have a problem, because the group’s material ability to demonstrate is broken. Ra called a gap a sickness. No accounting means nobody is keeping track of the numbers. No planning means the business does not know where to put money next. A gap at the top means nobody speaks for the business and nobody gets attention on it, which shows up as an offer the owner cannot articulate.

Your job as a consultant is to diagnose. You have a public relations problem. Your team has no reliability or coordination. That is the dysfunction, and you can name it in a sentence.

The numbers matter too. Three is more awkward. Four is more stable. Five is uncomfortable most of the time, because it wants either to grow or to break into a three and a two. And the group always defers to the oldest person present, regardless of who is in charge or who owns the company.

Now turn that on your own practice. Most consultants are solo, and a solo practitioner is not a Penta. That is information, not a failure. You cannot do this alone. You are always going to need to work with someone else. I say that as an advisor with no consistent generative capacity and no consistent manifesting capacity of my own. The only reason I am where I am is that I have partnered and teamed up with incredible talents in the industry.

The same logic decides what you personally stop doing. I am not the accountant. I cannot take care of numbers worth a wit. The moment I outsourced that and got rid of it as a responsibility completely, I had so much more energy for the things I actually love in business. Ra’s line was that the moment you stay away from what is not your job is the moment you begin to operate efficiently on the material plane. Your own bodygraph tells you which parts of running a practice are yours and which are quietly draining you.

Wearing both hats

New consultants ask constantly whether they are coaching or consulting. In the real world there is always going to be a wearing of many hats. Most people who coach have some background they bring to the table, and a BG5 consultant who also has coaching skills is doing both and wearing both hats.

Do not announce the switch. I tried keeping them separate once with a client who had hired me for both, saying I am in analyst mode now, wait, I am in coaching mode now. It is irritating and it does not work. The client does not need to know. They just want their problem solved.

In practice the seam looks like this. You are explaining, the client’s eyes glaze, and you land a focused, open question relative to their design instead of another paragraph of analysis. That is coaching mode, and it is often the moment the whole session turns.

What to specialize in

Do not be a generalist. Be a specialist. High school seniors and college students. Solopreneurs. Recruiting and placement. Nonprofits. Partnership analysis, which is a beautiful place to specialize if you are a split definition or born in the quarter of duality. Or a specific recurring failure you can spot fast. In my own design I have multiple trait fourteens, which is the engine that jump starts a business, and I know from experience that founders with a big vision and no route to it can be helped by the way I show them what is missing in the human capital of their business.

Whatever you pick, the mechanics come first and the marketing comes second. That order is the whole point. Get good enough that a client says how did you know that, after years and thousands of dollars of assessments that never named the problem. Then charging premium prices stops being a positioning exercise and becomes a description of what you are worth.

Common questions

How long before a new BG5 consultant can charge for work?

By the end of semester one you are able to deliver a BG5 career design overview. That means within ten weeks you should be properly equipped to start making a return on your investment. The condition is practice. If you do not practice, you will not get good at this, and the ten weeks will pass without a deliverable.

What do I actually sell as a Human Design business consultant?

Solutions to painful problems, delivered through specific analyses. The career design overview is the bread and butter and where you start everyone. From there the practice extends to the full career design analysis, partnership analysis, small business analysis, life work analysis, and leadership analysis, along with ongoing collaboration.

Am I a coach or a consultant?

In practice you wear both hats. Most people who coach bring some other background to the table, and a BG5 consultant with coaching skills is doing both at once. Do not announce the switch to the client. It irritates them and they do not need to know. They want their problem solved.

Why does Penta analysis require people to be physically together?

The Penta is a morphogenic field generated when three to five people are in physical aura contact on a regular basis, and it dissolves the moment they step out of aura. That is why a small business analysis needs a real, in person group, and why an analysis built on remote colleagues will not read accurately.
