The BG5 Business Glossary

Human Design has its own vocabulary, and its business application has a second one on top. This page is the translation layer: the terms used across this site, defined the way they're actually taught, with links to the articles that go deeper.

The four career types

BG5 renames the Human Design types into workplace language, because "Projector" tells a hiring manager nothing and "Advisor" tells them everything. There are four Types, not five: the Express Builder is a subtype of Builder in the same way the Manifesting Generator is a kind of Generator, so it gets its own row below without becoming a Type of its own.

Human Design typeBG5 career typeAt work
Pure Generator Classic Builder Consistent life-force for sustained work; commits through the guttural response, not the mind.
Manifesting Generator Express Builder Builder energy with a fast, multi-track way of working; responds first, then moves quickly.
Manifestor Initiator Built to start things and inform the people in impact range, rather than wait or respond.
Projector Advisor Built to guide the energy of others; works through recognition and invitation, and manages energy rather than generating it.
Reflector Evaluator Reflects the health of the group back to it; reads shift across a roughly 28-day cycle, so give evaluations time.

Group forms

Penta
The trans-auric form created when three to five people are physically together: a single working entity with its own structure and gaps, apart from any individual chart. The foundation of small-business analysis, and it exists only while the people are in the same room. Go deeper
Unified group
The working small group of three to five read as one functional or dysfunctional unit. Small-business analysis asks what this specific combination of charts equips the group to do.
Alpha
The person a group organizes around. In small-group mechanics, the group functions better when the natural alpha is actually in that seat.
OC16 / Wa
The large-group form: unified groups plus an alpha operating as a bigger body, with its own departments and dynamics beyond the Penta. Large-business analysis works at this scale. Go deeper
Alpha One
The label for the person at the top of the large-group form, the leader the unified groups organize under. The Alpha One leadership analysis is the flagship deliverable for advising an owner or CEO on getting the best from their organization. Go deeper

Chart mechanics in business language

Organizing frequency
The consistent, reliable theme a defined center broadcasts: energy you can organize work and roles around because it operates the same way for life.
Assimilation process
What an open center does instead: taking in and amplifying the energy around it. Variable rather than broken, and over time the source of hard-won wisdom about other people. Go deeper
Willpower function
BG5's name for the Heart/Ego center. Roughly 65 percent of people have it undefined, which means no consistent internal read on their own worth, the mechanical root of chronic underpricing. Go deeper
Attributes
The qualities a person brings to a business, read from the chart rather than a questionnaire: inner resources on lines one through three, outer resources on lines four through six, working in harmony pairs, with conscious and unconscious dynamics. Go deeper
Shadows and solutions
The BG5 framing of each open area at work: a predictable shadow pattern when unrecognized, and a practical solution once the mechanics are named. Go deeper
Profit potential
Where a design's earning capacity actually sits, including the open centers most people write off as weaknesses. Profit potential analysis reads it from the chart, then tests it against the business. Go deeper
Guttural response
The Classic Builder's yes or no, arising from the sacral in the moment. Not a feeling to deliberate about: the response is the decision mechanism, and overriding it is how builders end up frustrated.
Streams of awareness
The channel-level map of instinct in the chart: distinct streams for in-the-moment gut intuition, protective gut instinct, and voiced gut knowing, each carried by specific channels rather than one generic hunch. Go deeper

The substructure

Motivation (Color)
A calculated layer beneath the line and tone of the Personality Sun and Earth: six Colors (Fear, Hope, Desire, Need, Guilt, Innocence) naming why a mind acts. Not trainable; either the register is met or it is not. Go deeper
Transference
Operating from an adjacent Color instead of your own. The skills stay; the output distorts: desperation, passivity, anxiety. The leadership fix is attunement back to the correct register, not more pressure. Go deeper
The four transformations
The advanced layer of Determination, Environment, Perspective, and Motivation: the domains of correctness beyond strategy and authority, each fixed by birth data.

The BG5 practice and its deliverables

BG5
Base Group Five, the career and business application of the Human Design System, licensed and certified through Jovian Archive. The name points at the small group of five that business life is built from.
Career Design Overview
The entry BG5 deliverable: a one-to-two-hour session on how a person is built to operate correctly at work.
Career Design Analysis
The full multi-part individual analysis beneath the overview, covering how someone works, decides, and sustains output.
Partnership Analysis
A two-person business analysis, done properly by reading each person individually first and then the partnership itself.
Small Business Analysis
The group-level engagement reading a working team of three to five as the entity it is, usually delivered alongside an Alpha One leadership analysis for the person at the top.

Definitions here stay at the level of the recorded teaching this site is grounded in; see the methodology page for that standard.
